C/L around Northwest MISSOURI
« on: October 11, 2022, 02:58:52 PM »
Good day fellow C/L people, I now find myself in Ridgeway MO (1.5 hours north of KC, 1.5 hours south of Des Moines) often. Is there any control line flying going on near NW MO? MO, KS, IA, NE? Thanks!

Bill not much-certainly not any club or organized group.  Likely the closest is our field in Shawnee Kansas.  It's about two hours from there I'd guess.
With the weather changing we won't be flying on a routine basis till spring but we do get out on decent warmer days when not working.  If you could be interested in coming to our field at some point send me a PM here and we will fill you in on location and be able to stay in touch about getting out to fly.  In the spring I should be there almost daily.  Of course you are welcome to use the field anytime you wish if you bring your stooge.  It is very remote and rustic (in the back woods)  so go prepared!  There are no facilities close.

I know about that wonderful location, yes sir it is a drive. We have family in Fenton. Is Chip Largent associated with y'all? He was in our Norfolk VA club but moved quite some time ago. I think he landed there.

Oh, I wih we had video from back in the day when I attended my first contest at Buder Park.   I remember the pavilion that had an upper deck.  My son, JJ, won a fourth place kit in the beginner event back when he was about 10 or 11.  I sit here now thinking of all my heroes I watched and competed with at Buder Park.  My first attempt to make the F2C Team at the team trials were at Buder.   Back then it was just F2A, F2B and F2c competition.   Combat was not a world event yet.  So many memories.   Thanks for showing the video again.     I don't think Chip has made himself known yet. There are a few of us that are retired and we spend as much time there as possible. We have club contact information up on a bulletin board at the circles if he ever gets around there. Buder is right off the intersection of I-44 and State HW-141 just across the highway from Fenton.

In the Spring of 2018 I attended a control line fun fly at an RC field on the eastern side of Kansas City, MO.  There was about 10 or 12 attendees and a fair amount of flying after the rain stopped in the morning.  "Doc" Holliday was there and gave me a Francherized Twister.  Doc flew his B-25.  Jim Lee was there and flew a Sig Skyray .35.  And there was a combat flyer testing out models for his brother.  We flew off of some level grass fields.  I brought my son and his three boys to see what control line was like.

I tried accessing the archived AMA magazines from early 2018, because I'm sure it was a sanctioned event and was hoping I could give you the Event Director.  I'll try again later.

I FOUND THE CLUB THAT SPONSORED THE CONTROL LINE FUN FLY  Here is there website: https://www.49thsquadron.com

I don't know if the fun fly has been repeated every year since 2018, but it has repeated.  I don't know how many people who came were from Kansas City, but at least a few of them had to be from fairly close by.  I assume whoever organized this event should be able to tell you who the local flyers are.

The obvious solution to all of this , is that we all need to move to the same city, and maybe even live on the same street! Just think what that would be like!!

Thanks Jared, That certainly is closer than I have been seeing. Do you have a club, or just a few flyers get togethers?

We have a club but our numbers are few, and active flyers even less.  But our field is located in Seymour Smith Park at the intersection of 72 street and Washington St in Omaha.  We have a monthly meeting at the field in the spring summer and fall from day light savings time change to time change on the 3rd Wednesday of every month in the evenings.  Winter months we meet at the Swanson Library at 90th and Dodge for out monthly meeting.  Our meetings in the summer months are more like funflys and we have been having a stunt contest the past few years on the first Sunday of October.  If you have a facebook page I run our club fb page on there.  Omaha Orbiting Eagles
