Christmas 2017 giveaway Sig Super Chimpmunk build thread

Well I am kinda slow but this should meet Sparkies guidelines about the giveaway.
The kit looks great. Well packed with both die cut and laser parts. Right now I am planning an original paint job just like Mike done it. I think the original one was a beautiful bird. If it turns out half as good I would be happy.
Thanks again Sparky for the wonderful kit.

What will you use for power? Ive done 2 of these in that paint scheme. Lots of work but worth it.

More than likely either a Magnum 36 or a Thunder Tiger 36

Hi Rick,
I’ve built a total of three, power with (1) Fox 35, (2) OS 40H, and (3) ST 46.  The ST 46 was the best with a Grish 10 X 6 three blade prop.  Looking forward to your build.

I suspect that either of the engines that Rick is contemplating will work just fine, if the plane's not too porky, and if you run them like what they are and not a Fox 35.
AMA 64232

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Both of these engines deliver about twice the power of the old fox 35's. They are a modern engine and run well. They actually have more power than the LA46 with less weight.

Both John Thompson and Bruce Hunt struggled with a stock TT .36 Pro on an ex-Don McClave "Black Bird", at least a year apiece. As I remember the story, John finally sent the TT to Randy Smith to get upgraded to Aero Tiger specifications, which made it awesome. A stock Magnum XLS .36 is better than a stock TT .36, IMO.  D>K Steve

Built a Super Chipmunk once in the early 80's. Was a good build. The nostalgic side of me wouldn't mind doing another one some day but the practical side of me says the other projects I have, ending in my SV -11, render it functionally irrelevant.

There was an article on this plane with a lot of upgrades. If anyone remembers when and where it was if you could let me know.
Thanks

David Fitzgerald made a list of mods that he made to his Sig Super Chipmunk back in the day.

Thanks for posting the letter from Dave.  If I ever do build another Super Chipmunk for nostalgia reasons, this is how it will be done!

Something just caught my eye in Daves letter.  He mentions 45 deg up & Down elevator travel???  Is that meant to be 45 deg total, top to bottom?  It seems to me that most guys set things up so elevator wont go any further than 20-25deg either way.  Am I misreading this?
