Derek Moran wire bending jig for control horns...
« on: November 18, 2020, 03:43:05 PM »
I am trying to reach Derek Moran to see if he sells his bending jig for control horns.  I sent him a PM but haven't heard back.

I have the usual tools for wire bending but that doesn't make it any easier.  His jig looks like what I need.

Anyone familiar with this?

The picture of Derek's jig is from a recent Brent Williams post in Building Techniques.

This is another of those things lost with Stuka Stunts demise. I had that thread bookmarked for years. I remember it being discussed here, but I think it was in the form of a link to the Stuka post.

Make one.

Or ask Jim Lee / Lee Machine how much to make one and the minimum number required.  Count me in for minimum two (2) if the price is right.

Thanks for all the references on making and brazing control horns, but I am interested in bending them.  Actually, in precision bending them and that is what Derek's jig looks to do.  So, how do I contact Derek (I tried a PM but no answer so far) or does anyone have a measured drawing of that jig?

Thanks!

Hi
I made a copy of the Moran unit, best thing I have used for bending horns.

I brazed a couple of horns using Derek’s instructions and bent them with the bending jig.  Results were jolly good.

Paul:

Do you have a blueprint or measured drawing you can share?  I'll try making my own if I can't contact Derek and get one of his.

Thanks,
Scott

Paul, what radius bend does it make?

Scott, I can do a drawing , may take a few days ,busy at present.
Dave, have not measured bend radius, the pivot post around which the
wire is bent is 5mm or 3/16",I have bent 2.5mm (3/32") and 3.2mm (1/8") wire.

I can do a drawing

Paul: that would be very helpful since I'll have to make one if I can't get in contact with Derek and order one.  Thanks!

I'll check with some of our club members to see if anyone has a metal band saw and other metal working equipment to make one.  I have a large drill press that should work.  Did you have most of the materials at hand or did you have to order material?  I suppose the location of the studs are critical to get the correct bending radius and positions?

A friend and I are thinking about building one of these. We thought we would use bolts instead of the pins. Drill the holes then tap them. Bring the bolt up from the bottom. Mount the apparatus in a vice. Then one could add more holes for making elevator horns, and for making split horns for a Paul Walker’s adjustable flap system.

What do you think?

Vise-mounted = a good idea.
More holes = more adjustable = better.
Pins = better than bolts (bolt threads could damage the wire or the wire could damage the threads either is not good)
Solutions/suggestions: Bushings to protect threads (bolts from the bottom) or Shoulder bolts from the top.

Of course part of the apparatus, maybe the handle of the bending lever, should be
wrapped in copper wire and 5-minute epoxy to make it
relevant to this topic LOL.
