Chief
« on: May 17, 2025, 12:56:04 PM »
Does anyone know who designed the Chief?
NOT the original version with the polliwog airfoil, but the one kitted by Dumas.
I believe it's classic legal.
Thanks for any info.

I believe Joe Wagner designed the last version of the Chief and the Squaw.

There is an empty early Veco Chief kit box on Da-Bay that was manufactured by Henry Engineering.
Will search further for the information that you and others seek.
Good luck!

Joe Wagner designed the Chief, which I think is classic eligible. He also designed the Super Chief which predates his design of the Veco Chief. This was flown in 1950, so it is OTS eligible. I have a set of plans by Joe Wagner showing both designs with copious notes. Apparently, the Super Chief was flown by George Aldridge, and it influenced the Nobler design. Joe Wagner also designed the Dakota biplane. The Super Chief kit is available from Brodak.

Bob Z.

Anything that is OTS legal is Classic legal.

I have witnessed many times where a contestant will use the same OTS airplane in both events.

Curious about the Chief and Super Chief, and due to the comment about Brodak kitting the Super Chief, I did a search and found this:   https://brodak.com/super-chief.html

There was another "Super Chief", which was a .60 sized version (with tapered wing, IIRC) designed by Tom Dixon and kitted by "CLC", I think. Styled after the Chief. I had a kit and re-homed it. The late Dave Royer flew one for years with MERCO power, a .49 I believe. It had a bubble canopy and a completely different paint scheme, so didn't look  much like a Chief. I think we tend to envision them as yellow/blue with pre-WWII roundals, and Dave's was not like that.  D>K Steve

Yeah that Brodak stuff seems a little off to my understanding of it.   The Super Chief came first and is (barely) OTS legal.   The Chief-at least the kit by Veco came a little later and is Classic legal.   Brodak's description sort of sounds like the other way around though their dates for the Super are correct.   I built a Super directly off Joe Wagner plans a couple years ago.   I liked the thicker wing on it though it came out so light that probably wouldn't matter much.   Like most airplanes in the time period it was kind of hard to get a large enough fuel tank in it for the modern two-lap pattern- but I did-just -for the Fox.  I think I pushed the bulkheads out as much as possible and built the tank taking every mm of space available.

Re-re-reading Joseph Lijoi's post, he said it was available from Brodak, which I mistakenly took to mean and wrote that they kitted it. It is BMJR that kits it, and you can order it direct from BMJR, of course. Having ordered a kit directly from BMJR previously, I'd probably do that, unless I was also ordering some other stuff from Brodak.  y1 Steve

Dixons Super Chief had a straight wing. It was very much like the original Chief with sheet balsa flying surfaces and suggestions for decals to replicate the original paint scheme. The wing had leading edge sheeting and cap strips. I have the plans buried somewhere. I think it had 700 sq in 58 in wingspan wing. Dixon had another version called the Chief Instructor. This was a 35 sized modified Chief along the lines of the Smoother (Smoothie based) and Phoenix (T bird based). I have never seen the plans for this. There are probably many variants of the Chief out there. Art Adamisin had one where the tail moment was lengthened by 1 1/2". This plane also had a dive bomber canopy. He told me that it flew great and that he "he wished that he had that one back". Maybe you could lengthen the tail moment 3" and have a "Fancherized" Chief.

Bottom picture. My daughter holding the Dixion Chief Instructor. It is an easy build. It's more like a 40-size plane. It does fly well. The other two planes. Barnstormer built from a Guillow's kit.
F-6-F Hellcat that I scratched built.

I was a Chief guy at the very beginning of my Stunt career. I built a modified Chief around 1964. It was awful looking! But, it did fly well. East Coast stunt great, Bill Simons saw me flying it at a local field one day and offered to mentor me in building and flying. That kicked the door open for me, and I soon won my first Stunt contest flying that horrible looking Chief. Bill then coached me in building my first really good looking ship, a "Simonized" Nobler (he had a bunch of mods that made the model much easier to build). That Chief was a good friend to me in many ways...
