hey guys, I'm wondering where's a good place to pick up line reels. I want to cut a few different length sets for my next plane.
-
I don't like SIG ones (at all), if you're looking at genuine model airplane stuff. I bought some (red, Sullivan) last year from Tom Morris for a very good price. I like the narrow 4" spools, but others prefer wide 5" spools. If you like those, Brodak has them. H^^ Steve

Steve, in all honesty, I have no idea what I'll like, but I'll take a look at the brodak ones now.

MBS carries spools too!

I can't speak to what you'll like...but I believe the Sullivan spools I got from Tom were about $2 each, and you can check the price of the Brodak spools online and find you'll get about 3 from Tom for one from Brodak. If you want to carry a big box full of big spools with 4 sets for each model, you can. I would not. H^^ Steve

Check out the "Handy Leader Wheel" Item 2-WL made by Jeros Tackle Company Inc. and sold by Bass Pro Shops and Cabellas. There's a good chance Amazon has them too.

Way back when, we used to bolt two pie pans together. They come in all different sizes. LOL

You can make them using PVC. y1 Cut the 4" diameter PVC to any width. This one is the same as the Pylon Brand about 1 1/4".

Got fishin' buddies? Empty fishing line spools are great. A little work and you've got C/L reels. FREE!
Might want to check sporting goods stores. They probably throw them out when used up. This one is 5" in Diameter.

Bass Pro / Cabellas /Wally World fishing depts usually have reels like the leader reel described above. Wally World has some cheap knock offs, the good thick ones from fishing outlets sem to be longer lasting, maybe UV in the FL sun weakens the chap ones, but they seem prone to cracking after a couple years.

I had some of the Jeros leader spools from BPS (sent them to Gil). I seem to recall that they were made in Australia, making them local stuff for Greg. I never really used them, but did use one to store a set of used lines that I wasn't ready to throw away. Maybe Gil has used them, and can add his opinion? H^^ Steve

As it turns out, a bit of hunting on the internets revealed nice hi-viz leader wheels from BCF (boating/camping/fishing) chains that are across australia, at a mere $5.99 a pop.
I'll buy a couple and see what I think. If I like them I'm buy more. If I don't I'll use them to store my leaders on.
Thanks for the help guys!

Wow, I'm always amazed at what some folks will do to save a couple of bucks!

Well when you're money poor and time rich it makes sense.
These days I'm more and more time poor, but still money poor too!
Think I might be doing it wrong :-\
