Checking on our El Dorado friends
« on: January 19, 2023, 04:23:31 PM »
I saw on the news that El Dorado had some storm damage.  Praying that our flying friends there escaped with no damage.

Everyone over here is OK. It (probably a tornado) went right over us and touched down in the small town of Parkers Chapel, about 10 miles (as the crow flies) from where I live. A lot of damage to some mobile homes and roofs. A lot of trees down. 3 miles West of me, two trees went down and severed a major fiber optic cable. No phone, cable or internet until about an hour ago. I was in our hangar when the storm came through, the rain and wind hitting the hangar was deafening, with a little flooding. I guess you can say we "dodged a bullet."

Left El Dorado in 1953 with the USAF. Lived there a couple of years and was very fortunate as a very much not smart youngster trying to learn what the stunt pattern was in those years. I was very fortunately to be taken under the wings of a couple very good guys named Ken Makepeace and Glenn Brown. A large portion of what I may have accomplished in modern aviation I will quickly credit them for showing me what was possible . About the only name I recognize now is Mike Makepeace. Remember him from when he was in short pants. See his name occasionally in the results of the Stunt Contests in the Old Town.  Know Ken is gone and have not heard anything about Glenn in many years so am afraid to try to find him.

Have an Aunt still living there so we get some occasional news. Am very glad to hear things are well after the storms.

Doubt I ever get back that way. I am now in Northern Idaho shoveling snow for exercise. Have no contacts with any modelers up here.

I relive those days quite often.

Thanks to all who checked in and showed concern for El Dorado.

You all take care.

Double Deuce,

If you ever get the chance, El Dorado hosts two great contests each year - one in May and the other in November.  Maybe you could visit your aunt on one of those weekends.  It is well worth it.

Mike is a very active club member. I'm the CD for the November contest and I couldn't ask for a greater bunch of folks like Mike and all the others. Mike and I have been neighbors since 1993. He was one of the first people I met, Heard him running an engine in his back yard right after I moved in. The rest is history.
Come down and visit and do some flying. Our club flies R/C, C/L, Rubber and race R/C cars.

If you folks have spare time, a search on the internet for Luke Roy and the Rattler may turn up something to occupy your time.

One does find strange things on the internet.

Double Deuce aka Luke Roy. In El Dorado I was called by my middle name (Arlon) but the USAF quickly ended that. They had some real issues with a mis-spelled middle name on my birth certs and trying to get a security clearance is an interesting story for another time. And again, when I left the USAF and went to work on nuclear subs for the Navy, same panic, later date. Finally realized different security folks don't talk to each other.

Luke or whatever suits. The Double Deuce handle has been explained on this site several times.

Supper is ready. Got to run.
