I found some 1-gallon bottles of hand sanitizer for sale and bought 2 to clean my sons train tracks. It was on clearance for like $2.00 a gallon and it's 90% alcohol so I figured Give it a try. Got it home and noticed that it has been thickened a little, but this stuff works great for anything that you would use alcohol for. Like cleaning up epoxy or whatever. Since then, I have noticed that it is everywhere on clearance. I use alcohol around the shop quite a bit so thought I would share.

And the brand is?

Yeah, when the Covid panic hit, everyone and their mother's uncle was getting into the hand sanitizer business. That was one reason for the difficulty in getting fuel at that time. They were using up all the plastic gallon jugs that could be made and some even used methanol for it, which should not have been on the shelves. Some places are tying to unload their stocks now because it does have a shelf life. Look at the label on a Purell bottle an it will have an expiration date. I read a warning somewhere before the panic ever hit to check for the expiration date because some of the other chemicals can change from exposure to sun light over a long term, and become cancer causing agents. Things aren't always as they seem!!

Just some generic hand sanitizer. Basic label states 90% alcohol. Different brands same stuff.

Hmm, ok.

Well that certainly narrows down what brand.......

I originally posted this as a public service. I just happened to stumble on something that could be substituted for rubbing alcohol at a much reduced price. Brand doesn't matter if you see a gallon at wherever on clearance you know of other uses for it besides just your hands. This just makes me wish I would have kept it to myself. Btw it is from Fusion Chemical. That helps don't it

If you get out and really search, there are all sorts of fly by night hand sanitizers out with plain white labels, and barely any information on them. Like I mentioned, if made according to Hoyle, it has a shelf life and an expiration date, or should have. Should still be useful for cleaning lines and wiping surfaces down. Just keep exposure to your skin to a minimum.

If the stuff is made as hand sanitizer, why should it be important to keep skin exposure to a minimum? The ones I've used did dry out the skin quite noticeably, but that's easily fixed with some "Hoofmaker Mane & Tail Therapy". Not joking...good stuff, Maynard. H^^ Steve

This my point!! Some of it SHOULD NOT have been made as sanitizer!! You should not vigorously rub methanol into your skin! But that is what some carpet bagging profiteers did when the panic hit! Anything that remotely sounded like alcohol was snapped up and packaged and pushed to market to make money on the unsuspecting public, regardless of any guidelines. Who knows what was in some of it???

There, an answer to the question, was it really that tough?
-
Well it kind of was. My other shop is across town where it was at not here. And it really didn't help much did it? Just a opportunity to be sarcastic. Well done.

Wow. The logistic detail could have been easily explained up front then too. Sorry for not being a mind reader and asking about some simple extra detail. I'll try to remember not to ask anything more in the future, to avoid you getting too butt hurt. Jeez.
