Trying to fly a Magician JR 15 a gift from Richie Turrello.
« on: November 06, 2010, 12:42:51 PM »
Well a fellow from FMP flying failed by the name  Richie Turrello was nice enough to give me a nice little  Magician JR 15 to help us get back into the circle but I'm having some slight flying problems .
The first flight was a few days ago on grass and I got dizzy around 11 laps and I was flying low and crashed.
I brought it home cleaned it up and adjusted it so it is not so sensitive .
Today I went back to fly it was about 9 to 10 MPH wind so I took off into the wind and I was high and wanted to bring it down some . The wind in the tail the plane did a nose dive into the grass that was soft from rain the day before.  Was this because the wind pushed the tail up as it seemed like I had no control.

With C/L models it is always best to take off down wind, so you have line tension by the time you become airborne, the wind will then be on your back.

Put just enough fuel in the tank that the engine will still be running when you are ready to take off.  Put more fuel in as you get better and better with the dizzies.

Joe,
When I got back into this a few years back with my son, we got in the backyard and just spun around without planes. The wife came out and asked what we were doing. I told her we were practicing getting dizzy. It works.

Just spin around in your backyard (make sure the neighbors are not watching) and you will get use to it. And if you start to fell dizzy when flying, just focus on the nose of the plane.

But watch out when you start flying inverted, you may get a little dizzy when you go the other way. At least I did, but I am getting use to that now.

Maybe this is not the time to relate what is taught us at the stunt clinic.  Even tho I see a few experts not doing it.  If you have a study wind blowing one direction it makes this easy.  Never take off directly down wind or even to the wind.  Place your plane on the upwind side of the circle.  Then move it backwards about 10-15 feet.  Notice that big rudder on the tail end of the plane.  See the wind is trying to blow the tail towards he center.  :)!  Now make sure your helper does not push, lift or do anything to help the plane move, that is what that meat chopper is for on the front of the plane.  The rest is now up to the pilot.  Hope you did check your handle setting.  Hold the handle at neutral or very very very little up.  Signal for release and step back as the plane rolls.  Do not give up as if the plane is set right it will take off.  By the time you get down wind you should be to flying speed.  Usng the just before full up wind, I have yet to have a plane come in at me.  Keeping neutral on the handle, the wind will not get under the elevator and tip the plane onto its nose.  Also at my circle with the prevailing wind, I don't have to cart everything to the other side of the circle.  My pitting area is always on the up wind side of the circle.  Now I am ready the tar and feathers.  Hope this helps.  If I ha known about this in the early days,  could have saved some props. John;  Now this makes sense to me.    I checked and set the neutral on the handle.
Now I understand that the wind got under the elevator and tipped the plane onto its nose the first two times I tried to take off that day.   Well if all goes as planned I'll be going Monday and I'll do it this way.

Thanks for the help DOC I think you hit it on the head.

How did the wind get under the tailplane if you were taking off into the wind? ??? I've always taken off down wind with no problems. On rough grass there is a tendency to yank the model into the air, but on tarmac you can hold the model on the ground till the speed and line tension build up.

Yes I was on the grass and I wanted to get it in the air.
I could not understand how the tail came up but John explained it in his post.

To Joe and all others.  The credit should go to Big Art Adimisin who taught us this originally.  Then add Allen Brickhaus for reminding us again at the stunt clinic In Springfield MISSOURI. H^^

With the nice weather I went to FMP flying field with my son and as luck had it Neal was there and he did two flights with me .   The first one I did all by my self  with a full 3 oz tank and ran it out but I had a rough landing as I was a little high when the motor shut off.  Take off was much better for me doing it the way John and big Art say's. Neal took off and handed it over to me the second flight and I only used 2 oz fuel .
I was just slightly dizzy on the first one and it was much better then other flights.

4 good flights today take off's and all 2 with the Magician and 2 with 35 powered  Banshee Richie had brought for me to try,  Richie had brought with him, he helped me do a loop and a wing over .    He did have his hand over mine for the two stunts but I got the feel of it.  Wahoooo AP^

As I used to tell my Brother Bob when he was flying with me,  "You can't land in the clouds.  You have to land on the ground".   He still had a little trouble landing once in a while as I think it is a natural tendency to give up when engine quits. H^^

For some reason it seems that I'm giving it up when the motor quits.
I'm trying to keep it neutral from now on.
