Well I just finished final assembly on the Challenger .15 tonite and I'm declaring it ready to fly. This is an original 36" span design by Keith Sandberg for .15 size engines. It's an incredibly capable and great performing stunter for it's size and also makes a great "stepping stone" trainer with it's sturdy design. Laser cut rib sets with plans are available from Walter Umland, which is what this one was built from. Finished weight as shown here is exactly 25 ounces (too much clear, could easily have been lighter) and power is a Brodak .15. Finish is all Brodak dope and the "star and bar" graphics are vinyl from Emily at Control Line Central. All of the black Navy lettering and numbers, also in vinyl, are from Robb Kaiser at Blown Concepts in Minneapolis, MN.
If anyone is interested in more detailed info on this build there are separate posts with lots of photos in both the "Building Techiques" and "Painting and Finishing" sections here on Stunthangar.
Think Spring! H^^

Very nicely done Wayne.

As always your planes turn out great Wayne!!!!
My flying buddy Lou has the 40 size and its a good flyer. Your 15 size should be the same.
-
Very nice looking plane !!!!!

The paint scheme really accentuate the lines of the plane. It looks outstanding. Hope it flies as well as it looks. H^^

Nice job Wayne.

Huh??? Just to clarify, this .15 size design is an original and not based on anything prior nor is there a pre-existing .40 size version...yet. ;D
Thanks for the nice comments guys! H^^

Hey Wayne,
Louis Rankin had a... I think a plane just about like this called a Challenger. I will have to go digging for pictures. Maybe a different plane.
-
I think Dick Sarpolus had a .35-.40 size profile design called a Challenger too. By memory it was based on the old 48" Midwest Warbird series wing design.

Very Niiiiicccceee!!!!

It looks like a small Primary Force...and that's not a bad thing.

Very sharp! Nice clean paint scheme. Detailed. I dig it. CLP**

Very nice Wayne! What did you use for landing gear?
You're right, it was only 1 below zero in our area this morning at the time I got started - spring must be near!
Incidentally, Sarpolus used the Sig Super Chipmunk wing for his Challenger. This one is all Keith Sandberg.

Very nice attention to details. Nice choice for paint.

Man that's a very nice job right there. Might I pose a question without seeming like an idiot? Did you clearcoat it in matte? It looks sorta "eggshell" in the pics[which my be the effect of the lighting]? Just curious, not being critical at all, thanks.

That sounds like it.
I still think you build some very nice looking models!!!
Be sure to give us a flight report.

OK, Wayne! It really looks sharp. y1 Wing looks like the airfoil will be good for stunting. Something a lot of the smaller designs find lacking. Great job with the paint scheme!

do you have anu more pics? LL~ LL~ LL~
looks great !

Dennis,
I made the aluminum landing gear from scratch using the pattern on the plans.
John,
The clear finish is actually nice and glossy, about 75/25 thinner/clear for the last coat. I don't know, it might be the light on what you're seeing. To date I've never polished or rubbed out any of my models, I just shoot the final clearcoats, let it dry and go flying. ;D
Wynn,
Yeah, here's another one. ;D

Great Job Wayne

Three Challengers and No Waiting!!!! y1
The Challenger that was mentioned above is the Bill Noyes Challenger ( I have the Gallexy Models kit) and I think there were two versions of it, or at least I have two seperate plans for it. Next is the Dick Sarpoulas Challenger. It was based on the SIG Chipmunk wing. I don't remember if it was published in Flying Models or not, but the plan is presented in the back of the How To Fly Controline book that Carstens Publications puts out. Good book for those of you that may be interested and I believe it's still in print. Then there is Keith Sandberg's great little model. I have one framed up and Wayne's neat photos will be inspiration to get mine finished. VERY NICE WAYNE!!!!! As usual! y1 H^^

Well, here's another Challenger design. Gordan Delaney's fast combat design from the 70's. A darned good ship, and winner of the first Bladder Grabber in the hands of Jim Womack.

Bill Noyes Challenger was a sweet flying plane. I'd love to build another one if I could get the plans. It was perfect with a K&B 40.---LOUIE H^^ D>K

My Challenger with LA 15 , flies great.

Hi Neal, really nice looking plane! Did you build from a kit or plans? If plans where did you get them same question if a kit! Will you be returning to Brodak's FlyIn again? Its still a really fine time!

Hi guys that is correct, I cut Keith Sandberg's Challenger 15 and Wayne also did an
upsized Challenger 575 and I hope he shows that one also.
