DOPE

For years now I have been using SIG Nitrate as the base coat of dope for my models.  I use it for the initial coats.  Then I use it to attach the polyspan.  Then I fill with Zinc Stirate in Sig nitrate.  From there is automotive finish. 

Here's my problem.  I put down two coats of dope on the wing, flaps, stab, elevators.  I then covered the bottom of the wing with Polyspan.  About that time I ran out of dope.  Which I knew I would before I started.  I didnt think this would be a problem.  Steve called Sig to order some dope for both he and I and they said it was on back order and would be here some time in the future with no date given.  I headed to the LHS and their Sig order for dope has been on back order for 2 months.

They do have Brodak Nitrate in stock at the LHS. 

Are there going to be issues if I switch to Brodak nitrate right here in the middle of the job? 

I have never been one to mix and match.  If I start with one brand I use that brand with the matching thinner through the entire job.

I know I have read many horror stories about Nitrate, but for me personally I love it.  Always using the matching thinner and proper proportions has yielded many solid finishing surfaces waiting for the final finish.

I have used Sig and Brodak mixed several times.  Never really had a problem as long as I used the same thinner.
When I mixed thinners, the problem I had was time to dry, but no other issues.

Prefacing with the usual "always do a test panel" (just check it out first), you should be fine if you stick with the same thinner.

HI Doug,

Just to add to it, I have never used Brodak Nitrate, but I HAVE used Sig and Randolph Nitrates together.  I had the same problem you had, I ran out of one brand.  I use Dupont 3608S (no other suffix like "V") for thinning all my dope/paint products.  So far (30 years or so since I really started "building") I have never had a problem when using the same thinner, even with different brands of dope or lacquer (or two part automotive urethane clear).

Of course, you will do that and it will all look like a big ball of chewing gum, since I suggested it!
