Will Castor oil from the pharmacy work to add to fuels?
-
We used it a few times many years ago without any bad results, but the stuff from Sig is much much cheaper.

What ever castor oil you use it should be de-gummed castor. Drug store castor might not be. SLEEPY

I have used it in very small quantities, with indeterminate results. I would feel more comfortable getting a quart from SIG or Powermaster. I don't think there is a hazmat fee for castor oil.

Raby, if you have a motorcycle shop nearby, check with them about castor oil. When I flew/competed in F2C we had a shop we got our high grade castor from. DOC Holliday

Scott Dinger sells Klotz oils including BENOL (Castor oil). Contact him at:

Tower carries BeNol and so do most motorcycle shops. Cheapest to order on the net by the gallon from bike suppliers but prices vary widely.

Most Industrial Supply Houses still carry Lab Grade Bakers AAA Castor Oil. Price varies at different locations. It's about as pure as Castor comes.

Have gone thru 7 or 8 gallons of fuel mixed with Wally brand castor from the pharmacy, it says 100% pure, i hope i haven't messed up any engines ,, they all seem real happy!! Would love to see some research on " about as pure as castor comes", that would be a great thread !! I have heard about the degumming thing, don't know what it means, figured if it is good enough for me to drink ,, anyway i have seen no problems with my engines ,, mostly .25 to.46 size. One gallon of Omega 15% nitro with 8 oz of "pharmacy" castor.. just because it is easy to get ,, since we go to wal.. all the time.. I do have a quart of Sig castor and will try on the next gallon for a comparison..

You probably could, but it might make you feel pretty crappy. %^@

There certainly would be, uh, side effects.

Drink the castor? ??? Surely you're kidding. Everyone knows that castor is best applied as a "smellum". The prefered method of application being to properly atomize the castor with a model engine. Simply drinking the castor won't bring about the desired result (the pleasant aroma) not to mention circumventing all the enjoyment of the model engine application process.

I usually try to buy premixed fuel that suits my needs but have on occasion used castor from the grocery store. While I haven't used that much of it I have seen no bad side effects so far. It is my understanding that castor beans are naturally poisonous so I figure they must have to really clean up the oil for medicianal use. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I tend to think that if you get the pure kind with no sweeteners or flavorings it would be ok at least occasionally. If the stuff made specifically for engines is cheaper per ounce it would seem logical to get it instead of the grocery store stuff.

I used to make all my fuel with castor and meth (no nitro) from the drug store...we didn't have a hobby shop close by so that was the norm for us. It never gave a problem. If it came to flying or not flying I'd still use it but last I checked it was WAY more expensive than Sig castor. Like already posted, motorcycle shops carry various castor brands and I go there when Sig isn't in stock at the local hobby shop.

BTW, according to John Klotz, Sig castor is Klotz BenOil. They buy it in drums, then bottle for sale or blend in their fuel.

Sprint car and midget racers of years gone by, found that when they used castor in the crankcase
that breathing the stuff burned fumes )had the same effect.
they were running on Sunday ---and Monday! ~^
