Hurricane Milton - Tornados
« on: October 15, 2024, 08:49:36 PM »
Hello,  I just got my power back on from losing it last Wednesday.  I was watching the weather on TV where they was tracking some hurricane bands with tornados coming north through West Palm Beach toward me, in Fort Pierce.  Abruptly, it started raining HEAVILY.  The power then went out.   After that I heard a noise that sounded like hail or shooting my shutters with a bb gun.  I looked out and no hail.   When I went outside the front of my house was covered in dirt, shredded leaves and sticks.  It was in the crack of the front door.   I saw in the vacant lot across the street there was channel cut in the trees.  Then on the other side of my house I saw the major damage where giant trees were broken and shredded.  Apparently, that tornado jumped over me.  Can you believe that?

I went back in the house and a few minutes later I heard a roaring sound.  I never heard that before and opened the door.  Facing straight out, 2 blocks away was a gigantic tornado and I saw it sucking up giants pieces a metal straight up.  I slammed the door and we hid in the bathroom.  When we came out from that there was constant sirens.

I now know the tornado I saw killed 6 people.  It was only 2 blocks away from me.

I was out of power 6 days.

The damage is unbelievable.  The trailers where the people lived was shredded to small pieces and in some cases nothing but a piece of concrete was left.   There was semi truck not just knocked over, but picked up and moved across a highway.  There is a million foot warehouse, supposedly for Amazon that was finished a month ago that is totaled.  There are many businesses in steel buildings with steel I beam frames that are bent over double.

We had a tornado come through our town years ago. There was a newer subdivision a few miles away. The tornado touched down in that area destroying several 3 story homes. One was completely gone. Nothing but at slab with some pipes sticking up. If I remember correctly 6 people were lost in that house.
Was also driving at night when that tornado hit Tuscaloosa Alabama several years ago. We came in right behind it. Looked like a bomb went off. And four years you could still see the tree damage.
I think tornados are more deadly than hurricanes because you don’t get days notice they are coming.

Rusty,
Glad it jumped over you and you are OK and have power and I hope water. Stay safe. Up here in Ashevile, NC we are close to getting water back, hopefully today.

Best,   DennisT

All I have to do is get Comcast to put the cable back up that is laying in my yard.  The cable still works, but is off the hook on the pole.  The buy came today and said they could not reattach it because some tree branches was in the way of them putting their ladder on the pole.  I cut the branches down; 15 minutes.    In order to get them out here I had to make a better business bureau complaint.   I called their number last week and got a ticket humber, but they never came out.

I am glad you are getting settled too.
