Title: Carl Goldberg P-40 flies again
Post by: Richard Fleming on June 22, 2024, 02:38:59 PM
Back in 1989 I built a P-40 for my brother Paul for Christmas. I scratch built the fuse and tail and installed  a Goldberg Shoestring wing from a kit I had. It hung from the ceiling in his garage for many years. Then in-between him moving, the P-40 went in my Dads barn for about eight years. I pulled the P-40 out of the barn last year and planned on making it flight worthy again. The monokote was faded, four or five ribs were broken along with the elevator and prop. A mud dobbers nest was on the rudder and the needle valve was rusted up but the Fox .35 still turned over! I repaired the wing, cut out the elevator and stab replacing it with 3/16" balsa. The old aluminum bellcrank was replaced with a Brodak unit with bushed leadouts and 4-40 pushrod. Covered it with Ultra Coat and added new decals. So, my brother got the P-40 again for Christmas in 2023 lol. Paul was now determined to fly the plane and this morning we got together and finally flew the P-40 for the first time!

Great story and beautiful resto on the plane. I love this kind of stuff. Just a great appreciation for that old plane.

I think it looks better with the Shoestring wing, for sure. The Goldberg P-40 wing has a lot of taper and is thinner I think. So, Ultracote makes Olive drab covering? Are they still in production? I know MonoKote dropped olive drab a long time ago.
   Type at you later,

I bought some olive drab Ultracote a couple of years ago at a local hobby shop. But not sure if it is still available as I haven't looked lately.

Yes, I bought some olive drab Ultracote three weeks ago. Great stuff and I like using it better than the Monokote but they don't give as much covering on the roll. The P-40 is my favorite warbird.
