WOW!
I WONDER IF THE TREES HAVE TAKEN OVER THAN WEIRDEST OF SEATTLES WORST FLYING SITES?
FOND MEMORIES FOR SURE...HOWEVER!
Jack Shane and I will always remember that site as a real test of courage. Anyone who has ever flown there will remember those strange and weird puffs- gusts of wind that would spill off the passing railroad box cars after they would pass...or sudden down draft eddies of wind that would find their way into that little hole in the woods that called a flying field?
BRAVE IS THE HEART OR SOUL...WHO DARE TREAD THE SKIES OFF THAT CARKEEK-EEEK! PARK site from the history books of the early 60's.... LL~ LL~ VD~ H^^

Just took a drive there, was going to fly my magician for the first time. Was a little breezy, but the area was nice. Could'nt find a model field in use sign anywhere. Why three center markers? 2 little and 1big.

I haven't flown at Carkeek Park in a very long time. Trouble was, the circle could only really handle a 120' diameter. Had to fly with a bit less then 60 foot lines. Between the wind off the Sound (a stone's throw away) and the hills around it along with trees everywhere, it was like flying in a washing machine. Still, it was nice to have a dedicated site.

Keep us posted on how thing go there. I was under the impression the city wasn't trimming the trees (maybe intentionally) making it difficult to fly there. If things go well maybe we can schedule a picnic or fly in there.

Here are some shots from-----------waaay back when..(around 1964)
The trees are quite small as you can see....but last Smmmer we drove down to the site and it was COVERED WITH OVER HANGING TREES.
Took these shots....Jack and I were doin a little combat practice time assisted by his wife. She hated BOFUS' for showering her with castor residue. She had the hand lauching routine down pretty good for us in those days. LL~

Has anybody approached the park department. If you don't use it, you will lose it. When I was flying at Shawnee Mission Park I kept the circle mowed so I could fly. It was enough room for 60 foot lines. Have a hedge tree on north side of circle that hindered any wandering. But, with careful planning and a hand saw I took care of some of the problem. Haven't been out there since I started flying up north, so I don't know the conditon of the circle. It was always fun when a park patrolman would get onto me about doing what the park was supposed to do.
You guys may have to start flying smaller planes on shorter lines. Of course it depends on how far you have to drive. For just a couple of flights I go to the school I do crossing duty at with the school principle's permission. Looks like you have a pad to stand on. H^^
