Cardinette
« on: August 31, 2008, 04:17:22 PM »
A few months ago I read about the cardinette, I was wondering if the kit was going to be available from Brodak soon. I looked on their site for the plans but I couldn't find them. I have a brand spanking new Saito 30 just itching to go in something, and I really like the thought of a little Cardinal. It looked GREAT.
Please let me know what the status is.
Thanks, "B"

I've been looking at this one myself. I hadn't heard about a Brodak kit.

Why not just contact Brodak yourself?

I did, no answer as of yet.  That is why I asked here.  I was hoping Bob may have an answer for me.

Brad - I just posted this on SSW.

"Gents - at this point there is no decision as to whether a kit will be offered.

I'm still waiting to evaluate the ARF/ARC variants.

John does indeed have the plans available. You may not find them on the website but they do exist - I did them in AutoCad 2000.

If a kit is not offered, you can and should build the Cardinette from the plans - it's an incredibly easy plane to build. I built the prototype in less than a week and that included the take-apart feature which is not really needed. I also wrote a feature article for CL World, detailing the build procedure.

It would truly be a perfect home for the SAITO 30, my all-time favorite engine.

I brought it to the 2008 Fly-In for people to play with but a death in the family dictated an early departure.

I've had many flights on the Cardinette and it turned out to be quite a performer. Mine has flown with the B-25 and Surpass 26. I do plan to try it with the SAITO 30 at some time.

Well I got tired of waiting for Brodak to make up his mind to make the kit, arf/arc or full kit.  Ordered plans way last spring and building the shop got in the way of finishing it.  It is ready for the covering and finish.  It will be powered by the little 4c I have.  More later,  DOC Holliday

Can some one tell me the wing span and wing area?
This sounds like a real fun aircraft to build!!!!!

Hi, Steve - yes, it is fun to build and fly. EASY, in fact.

The wingspan is 44 3/4 inches, 9 3/4 chord, and approximately 435 square inches, including the flaps.

The weight as shown is 31.9 ounces. It has the Surpass 26 installed.

As shown, it flys perfectly with the Master airscrew 9-6, on 52 x .012 lines. I use Brodak 10/23 exclusively and have never had and run problems.
I think the plug is some generic 4S plug, possibly a K&B. (I have tried just about every 4S plug on the market and have yet to find any difference.)
A narrow non-uniflow, atmospheric vented 2 3/4 ounce tank is fine for the B-25 but too much fuel for the Surpass. I have tried uniflow and I do not care for it.

The interesting thing is I have never trimmed it. It flew so well that I did not see any need.
As you might wonder about balance, since I was experimenting with the B-25 and Surpass 26, I made two sets of mounting holes. The 25 installs approximately .9 inch further forward than the 26. Balance is perfect with both. Of course, as individuals prefer different flying characteristics, the CG might be shifted as required.

Here are a few quick shots I took around five minutes ago.

I will gladly answer any more questions if I can.

Bob, thanks for the pictures!!   ;D

The more I see it, the more I want to fly it.  I can't wait until winter gets here so I can make one!!

Wynn, thanks in advance for the plans!
Thanks again, B

After I  made the plans, I sent them to Brodaks.
They're only available there.

That is strange, as I just sent an E-Mail and was told the total cost for three sheets to my address.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

11290 - who exactly did you speak to?
When in doubt, call John.

Hi, Steve - ST 34? Seems like way too much engine. I'm really not that familiar with it but if one subscribes to the "too much power is not enough" theory then it could possibly do the trick. You might have to widen the fuselage and add lots of tailweight to get things to balance out.

Once you see it in person, you realize that this is really a small airplane.

Remember, it flew perfectly with the Surpass 26, even doing quite well in the wind.

No idea who it was that answered the phone.  Didn't seem to interested in finding out if they were available or not, just said that they did not sell plans and hung up.

That kind of behavior is not typical of Brodak.
If someone did indeed speak to you like that, I would complain directly to John.
Something is definitely not right.

Thats a one week build? Wow Tom...you're the man no doubt!!!!  I just happen to have an OS .26fs too.  Found it
at the Perry Swap event last March for 50 bucks...NIB.  Y'all need to come down the first week of March 2009. It
is an awe inspiring sight. Four huge buildings and more than 1000 tables of MODEL STUFF.  I even saw Tom H there
last year with a bunch of goodies including a great Webra .28 I wish I had found first. Great airframe Tom. Hope we
see you there again next year too. The red is a-ok too.
