Hello,
Anyone have advice on the balance point for a Brodak Cardinal? I couldn't find that information in the building manual that came with the plane.
Also, like others have mentioned here, the plane flies outboard wing down level and up inverted even without any tip weight. The wings are straight. I cut 4" from the flap ends. Hinged the outboard flap and rigged an adjustment mechanism. I shortened the inboard flap same as the outboard to equalize both flaps but made this flap end level and rigid. Hope this helps things.
Thanks,
Joe

Not sure why, but several of the Cardinals flying had that same wing low problem. Lowering the outboard flap will raise the outboard wing when upright and cause the outboard wing to be higher when inverted. You might start out by tweeking the outboard flap down (while firmly holding the flap horn to prevent upsetting the flap/elevator relationship) about 1/8 inch.

I think it was in the ARF section where Dennis A. talked about the heavy outboard wing. He had to gouge out the OB tip. My Cardinal has no tip weight and it flies just fine.
EDIT - Here is the thread http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?topic=5684.0

If the wing is up in inverted flight it is not a tip weight problem. you could try the flap tweak or if the wing is covered in iron on film you could twist the outboard wing and hit it with the heat gun. A little goes a long way. you could also make a little trim tab on the outboard wing.

Thanks to all who offered help . I set the C.G. at 3" back from the L.E. as recommended and, hopefully, tomorrow I'll get a chance to try her out.

Joe

In the few years I have been flying model airplanes, it didn't matter if it was stunt, racing, combat or carrier, I was always told to start at the high point of the wing for CG balance. But, then came the flat winged airplanes. The little booklet I got from "Americas Hobby Center" stated to start at 25% of the chord of the wing. Now this is all on control line airplanes. Free flight was a different breed altogether. If I remember right if you have one of the following: a SIG catalog or Brodak catalog there is a lot of info in the front of them. They are well worth the money.
Anyway how can a heavy wing fly high upright and low inverted or vice-versa. My kit of the "Original Magician" came out that way. I had to take hot air gun to it and warp the wing until it was straight. I have also been told to never tweak flaps to level a wing. Throws every thing out of kilter when doing maneuvers. Using part of the flap as a trim tab is good idea, if you remember to cut the same amount on the other flap. Have fun, DOC Holliday
