Carbon Fiber Tanks

   Not sure where to put this so moderator feel free to move.

I was just wondering what kind of resin/epoxy is used when making a carbon tank. Also how fuel lines are put in. I want to find out if this is feasible for me to do before i have the machine shop cut me some big pieces of aluminum.

Epon 862 is the resin to use.  It's made to be immune to solvents and is used for tank linings.  The company has changed hands several times since Shell, and the stuff is now known as Epikote.  E V Roberts is a good source:  http://www.evroberts.com/EVRTDS/49/EPIKOTE%20Resin%20862%20EPIKURE%20Curing%20Agent%20W_tds.pdf .  Dave Fitzgerald and Jim Tichy made some tanks from this, as did I.

Interesting to know how the weights compare between similar capacity/plumbing tanks made from carbon and say .008" sheet metal.

  I don't have the numbers but they are substantially lighter. Whether or not that outweighs the difficulty of construction to custom sizes or the tendency to shed particles into the fuel is a matter of debate.

   My holdup is that since I can't make it myself, I don't have the flexibility to make it the size/shape I want. The debris issue can be dealt with by checking the filter periodically.

Thanks for the help. I have been trying to figure how they were made in one piece, I never thought of putting end caps on them.  I just need to get some of that resin.
