Can't Post Pics

Well, I've tried 4 times now to post px on my engine project and the server just times out and won't post them. I check the size, they all hit about 950KB, so they should be small enough.

Tell the story.  Like this: "I clicked 'additional options', I clicked 'Browse', I selected 'YX_Poster_0422.jpg' from 'My Stuff/Waiex/Full Scale Pictures', I hit 'Post', and my computer blew up!  I've blown up every computer in the house except for my wife's laptop, my son is really pissed at me, and I'm sending this from the local library under an assumed name.".

Note: I lied about my computer blowing up -- good thing, too, 'cause I need to back up my hard drive.

950k might be a little tight. That would just be one pic per post.
I would say crop them down to around 350k and that will allow about 3 pics per post.

Just a thought.

IIRC, when I try to post too much the server smacks me upside the head with an error message so I know what I'm doing wrong and that I can't get away with it.

But, there's a good diatribe on the Administration Forum (top of the heap) in a thread started by Rudy Taube about posting pics. If that doesn't get your pics reworked and posted, definitely give me a PM or email.  Steve

You have to stay under 1000kB per post, for all the pictures.  That means one 950kB picture, or ten 95kB.  It's considerate to go with smaller if you can, although I certainly fail on that measure myself often enough.

I have lost count how many pictures and posts are out in cyber land/space when I was trying to learn this stuff.   Still learning as on each site they have different requirments.

Try posting pics on SSW for awhile. That will get you used to downsizing them (50K limit).   

Seldom do we need that much quality anyway.

There's no need to struggle with over-sized photos.   Photo resizing can be a piece of cake.   Just for a test, I picked a photo, and re sized it to 640 X 480 pixels, file size is 77 kb, and it took all of 10 seconds. !!

The program that I like to use, is made available by VSO, and is called Image Resizer.  It's free, and it does just what we need for posting to a forum.   Here is the link to the VSO web page.

After you install the program and run it for the first time, it will ask you if you want the simpler interface, or the one with more options.   Just select the simpler interface.   After that, you can do all that you want to do, just using the default settings.

The neatest feature in this software, is that it shows up in your *right click* menu, when you are on an image.   Scroll down and select "Image Resizer",  and that will launch the program.  In the "Profile" drop down menu, you can select the size you like for posting.   A good starting point would be 640 x 480 pixels.  Then click "Process" at the bottom, and you are all done.  The default setting will leave the reduced photo in the same folder as the original, and will label it so you can distinguish it from the original.

Back on the VSO web site, you will find a *Help* box on the right margin.  In that box is a video explanation of the resizing process, and also a written explanation as well.   Take a few minutes, and follow the explanations they provide.

Spend a few minutes with the program, and you will understand just how simple it is to re size a photo without a lot of work.

I use tinypic.

It allows you to upload and use the link inside forums, and will resize to suit automatically, no messy software, no sticky fingers.

I find it easy.

That happens automatically, when you "save as", by just changing the name of the picture slightly.
First thing I do is give the picture a title, so I can pick out the one I want to work on from among the group of new pics. At each step of rework (at least for awhile, until you get the hang of the process), "save as" and add a "%" sign or similar. That's fairly logical, since it's a percentage of the size it once was. My end photo title might be: "Extremeus_Piped 46VF RandyPowell%%%.jpg" (as a fictitious example). Eventually, I may crop off all the %'s, when I delete the original picture, and all the intermediate versions. If I want to save the original, I'll leave the % on one under 50kb.

The more I use IrfanView, the more impressed I am with its capabilities (and price!). Logical sequence: Name. Save. Crop. Save.  Resize. Save. Compress. Save. Done! Changing colors, contrast, exposure, or adding text is useful, but that's about all the extras I feel I need to use, and those very rarely. In fact, I don't crop my pictures very often.    Steve
