Midwest P-63 / Engine
« on: September 27, 2011, 06:27:25 AM »
Hi Guys,

I was given an old Midwest P-63. I am planning to build a new fuse and tail feathers, then reuse the old wing.
Do you think an Enya 35 model 5224 is a good engine for it? Square intake, #1 venturi, low compression head.

My plan is to use it for classic nostalgia-30 and profile at Brodak's next year.

Thanks,
Chris

ps. looked it up and saw it is not classic legal.

Should make a good combination.   When I had my P-63, it was powered with a McCoy Redhead .40 using a 11-5 laminated prop that Bill Swagerman made with the Y&O emblem.   This back when the kit first came out. H^^

Not Classic Legal?  I admit that I do not know all the rules for Classic. However I thought it was about when the plane was designed and or kitted etc to determine if a model is classic legal. Back in the late sixties and early seventies I flew almost all the Midwest 48" profiles and I would assume they are all Classic Legal.
Not trying to start something here if they are in or out just say why.  Thanks Chuck

My understanding was that the first three Midwest Warbirds, the ME-109, Mustang and P-63 were classic legal. Skyraider and P-40 not. I flew a ME-109 w/Enya 5224 35 in the late 70's. Good combination.  8)

HI Chris,

That should work out just fine.  Try to keep it light in the rebuild, and be ready to run it in a wet 2 mode.  My 5224 .35 will run a 4-2, but several others say theirs will not.  Just saying that if you want a 4-2 break, and it doesn't want to, then run it like a "modern" engine.

Mine had a '70 Fox .40 Stunt (big case) and I didn't get the tank trimmed for inverted flight before it got sold.  I really did like it, though! ;D

Thanks for the info guys, I will try to keep it light on the rebuild.

I looked at a post this morning which made me think it is not classic legal:

http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?topic=17061.0

but then I see Randy Smith offers the plans as classic legal.

The one I am working on is the 48" wingspan version.

This is interesting. I wonder which way it is? Ty says they are not classic legal. He is pretty good at this sort of thing. Then again Randy is selling the plans as classic legal. He is good also. So I will keep checking on this thread till I get it clear. I have a P-63 midwest kit that I will build soon as I get all the other ships done. By then this issue will be resolved.

Hi All, No matter what the final determination may be it certainly is "Legal" for Nostalgia 30! Who's going to split hairs anyway! Phil Spillman

You got it, Mr. "Winkie" man!  I don't know of a place that would even question the Midwest P-63 if you entered it in Classic.  Of course, everyone around here is now using Nostalgia 30 in place of Classic so the point is moot........ ;D

I know the Skyraider and P-40 do miss the Classic deadline.  They came out during a time when I was working at the "Chartreuse Caboose" (hobby shop) and that was during/after 1971.
