This is an example of why I cant keep a nice airplane.
« on: May 28, 2020, 07:34:07 AM »
The first picture is what used to be a shelf with stunt trophies, the second picture is what happens when shelf falls on new Dreadnought due to a sticking door being slammed..... by me of course.

Have not even flown it yet and I am already making repairs  :'( :'( :'(

If its not someone driving over my airplane, its a shelf falling on them, or me knocking a tail of rudder off going through a doorway.

Grace is not my strong point

Tim, I'm sorry to see that happen to a beautifull model like yours. However, I'm glad you posted this because I convinced myself this kind of stuff only ever happened to me!.....gene

You're not alone. I showed up at a field for a day of 1/2 A combat back in the mid-80s. Had a stack of brand new, never flown combat ships stacked outside the circle. One of the fliers, an absent minded/spastic type, got all excited about something... and thoughtlessly stepped back and "crunch"... so much for those airplanes!  '' ''

I was not a happy camper.

oh, boy, very sorry to see the new plane that way guy.

BUT, now other than the repair work on it, you have to do a couple other things now as well.
That should take care of it from happening again ya know.

I know Scott will be sick when he sees the picture.

Sorry to see that, Tim, but it does look and sound familiar!  ~^ By the way, I drove over my own plane once ( I put it, a two meter R/C glider) under my van on a 100 degree day once, trying to keep it somewhat cool, after two or three hours of staying in the heat, forgot about it. I also have had some "unique" stooge accidents!

Tim,

My condolences and congratulations on your trophy wins.

By the looks of the workmanship on your model, I strongly believe you'll have absolutely no difficulty with the repair.

I'm sure the model will be back to the original look and quality.

BTW, you chose some really nice colors that work great together.

YUP!   I build and fly for ME not for some, trophy.

Some pretty, stylish, award winning, aknowledged accomplishment, trophy.

sniff

But I can't count the times I've finished covering and trimming a wing NEVER as good looking as most everyone elses, turned around and punched a hole the WHOLE way through a wing.
Then, there was the time I tacked the control horn mount in without actually doing the job (don't build really really late inthe morning folks) It flew a couple dozen test flights nice.  Pull test wasn't such a great time to find out I forgot a step.  D'oth.

Your repair will no doubt look bettter then my best efforts.  Extra T for Terrific.

I've often wondered if a model was damaged or stolen from your car or house from a break in what kind of value would the insurance company put on something like that. Sorry about your airplane.

Thanks all, I am still mad at myself, but have already stripped off the covering, from a damage standpoint its not that bad....just going to be a challenge to cover and finish

On another note Carl, Those trophies are the ones from the NVCL contest....I wonder if Scott is to blame for this some how  >:D >:D

Tim,

I'm glad you started your repair.

I have to ask.

Your choice in the color teal has really caught my eye.

Where did you come by this paint?

Charles,

It is all Brodak dope, the mint color is my own custom mix, a little neon green blue and lots of white. The teal is a standard color.

Tim ,
Hate to hear of your incident  , with your paint skills , you will make it better than ever, time consuming , but you can do it , Just like you did on the chipmunk .

I have a few  vintage kits stored on a shelf , above my work bench . After reading your post, I moved the kits  to a safe location , away from my new plane

Now you remind me of why I hang my planes from the rafters.  Every time I sit one on the floor to wait a good cleaning they get a hole in them,  Usually from other planes I stack on them. D>K

I feel your pain.

Although my models are mediocre at best as far as finish is concerned when my late wife was very ill we had bags of tablets and treatments which were kept up high well out of the reach of our grandson.

One day for no apparent reason (No one in the room) they fell off the shelf and wiped the tail off my Ringmaster, the tail and fin off my Nobler and went straight through the wing of my Easy 7. Obviously although all of little concern at the time.

But as I slowly make my way back into the fold somewhat annoying to say the least as I survey the work ahead.

I was out in the shot tonight and all structural repairs are complete, filled all the dings. just need to final sand then I restart the finishing process. It will get there eventually. Learned a valuable lesson the hard way....oh well

Thanks for all of the nice thoughts, Steve maybe we will get to see each other at NVCL if things get better

Sorry to hear about the damage but happy to hear that, like many complaints in life, this is an opportunity to get some good work done.

But, Tim, you can be sure that I and the rest of the NVCL crew are mowing our field weekly in anticipation of the September Stuntfest.  I've been mowing out the pits and the parking a little larger than usual so we have lots of parking.  Just today, another NVCL member mowed the 1/3 mile driveway past the gate leading to our field.  And a lot of the smaller trees have been cut down last Fall, too.

I expect we've all got our stories.  Mine concerns a repair, re-covering and re-finish job I did on an own-design with an I-beam wing.  Though I say it myself, I made a nice job of it.  Then, before I even had a chance to take it out and fly it again, I somehow managed to drop a heavy wooden workbench stool on it, leaving it beyond any possible repair.

See?  With a little extra effort it is easy to do incredibly dumb things!  Why just do normal dumb stuff when you can drop a rake or a shelf full of trophies on your brand new airplane?  See?  We are incredible people!

Similar situation years ago wiped out a small fleet of free flight models. His solution was to remove all the small plates from the trophies and mount them on an appropriate board. The trophies were then donated to various contests. End of problem.

I like that! Great idea.

I have a life history of restoring imported sports cars. The last one I had I kept for 25 years and the car would always take an award at shows.

First thing I would do when I got home was to throw the award away.

That works also.
