Score canopy problem....
« on: July 23, 2006, 09:06:09 PM »
Guys,
I cut the canopy on the score lines and the canopy doesn't fit by a wide margin. It looks like the wrong canopy was put in the kit. Anybody else have this problem? I'm calling TF tomorrow to get this resolved.
Thanks

Crist,
You got my curiosity up about this, and I am not quiet that far on the bashing of my Score.
I just went back in the shop and cut out the front and rear arcs only. It appears to be correct size when I get down to the score lines for final assembly. Whats the deal with your size? Is it too short, or is the rear arc too narrow( not fitting the turtle back shape)? Is it tinted smoke or clear? Mine is smoke. I looked for a mold part number, but was blank. I hope TF doesn't send you the same one you already have...

I put a 4" Morris BC in mine with  ball links and CF pushrods. What are you doing to yours? I've read some praise on its flight performance! :) Looking forward to it...

Let us know what Top Flite sends you. I think I heard someone else got the same deal... :(

Richard,
Here's what TF sent me.  Yup, it was the right one.  It was quite a bit larger than the wrong one.  The wrong one has less of an oval shape on the back and on the front.  It looks like it was made for an airplane that had a flat top with rounded edges.

Great news Crist! Must of got mixed up in the sorter/packing bins. I guess maybe they're packing it in the same area as the RC ARFs...Good to know they made good!
I did notice a dent in the side of the bubble on mine, but I'll just have to deal with it.

Do you see any point in not sealing it on permanently with canopy bond? I see they don't reccomend it, but it doesn't have any access altering propertys I can see.Are you going to keep it as a take apart, or did you epoxy the feathers on?

Have you flown it yet?

Richard,
I'm treating my Score as strictly a test bed for my Saito 56 before I spend all winter building a ship for the Saito.  If I were serious about it, I'd at least run a strip of 1/4 inch stripping tape found at the hobby stores, around the perimeter to seal the canopy.  Seeing it only screws on, if it gets gunked up, just removed it and clean it up.  I glued on the stab, but left the wing only screwed on.  I replaced the bellcrank, and control horns, and used ball links and carbon fiber pushrods.  I used the motor mounts to mount the Saito and it looks like it'll balance right at the suggested CG of @4 inches aft of the LE.  Weight is @ 65 ounces.  I did mount a CF LG to the fuselage just in front of the wing though.  I added 3/8 sq hard maple to each side then glued on a plate of 1/16 ply, covered it up with white Monokote and screwed the LG to that.  Of course I had to shorten the tank cover.

Crist,
Does it sit up any higher? That was another area I too was thinking about; doesn't appear to have much prop clearance in its current design. Needs a real short cut circle
to take-off on...

I too have other birds to fly, but I needed a cheaper way to get my arm and wrist back into shape without tearing them up! :'(. Thanks for the update!!

Yes,  enough to swing a 14" prop with no problems.

Richard,
The CF LG is a Bolly from Randy Smith.  It has a sweepback of 38mm.  I used the wheels that came with the airplane.  I bushed them with 5/32 brass tubing and used a 4/40 x 1 1/2 screw for axles.

I made a 4 oz metal clunk tank like Bruce Hoffman from Australia uses.

Crist,
That is a wild looking backsweep on the LG! It definitely got the nose at the right attitude for grass flying..I guess 4 oz. is all you need for the 4 stroker for a good run!
I can see why you wanted this for a test bed!!! It'll give you plenty of room for prop experimentation! y1

Thanks for posting the great pixs and info!

Will,
Yup, the Top Flite Score.  An ARF.
About FCM.  My daughter is due with our first granchild on the 12th.  My guess, I'm not gonna make it this year.  Though I will if I can!

Crist,

Which bellcrank did you use--none of my 4 inch cranks will fit without surgery?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
I used a 4 inch bellcrank that I make from 1/8 phenolic just like a Tom Morris one.  Yes, it required surgery, but why take a chance with the lousy stock one?
