What many don't realize that Burt Rutan (reported by the AMA as "Elburt" Rutan) won CL Senior Scale at the 1959 Los Alamitos Nationals with an original Fairchild F-27.

Burt flew to St Louis in his Vari Viggen. That was the only privately owned aircraft that I ever saw permitted on the McDonnell ramp, since he knew everyone in flight test.

My college roommate worked with Burt both at McDonnell and Edwards.

There was an interesting quote from Bert in a magazine I read a while ago. While speaking at the EAA fly-in, one of the guests asked how long it took to build the kit in question. Berts answer was "About a wife and a half". Sounds like all modelers have the same problems regardless of model size.  Al Burczycki

Bert Rutan graduated from Calif. Polytechnic Univ in 1958.  Just as I was entering as a freshman.  I sure regret having missed him at school!  But I flew C/L planes at the Cal. Poly airport runway.  I think Bert did the same.

The AMA mis-spelled his name when he won Senior CL Scale at the '59 Nats.  They listed him as "L. Burt Rutan" rather than "Elburt".  Nevertheless, it was the same guy.  Model was a Fairchild F-27, though I don't know the power or any other particulars.  A photo appeared in an old magazine (MAN? American Modeler?) but it's long gone here.

Words is, later in life, he and his staff often flew RC models on the ramp in front of Scaled Composites (Mohave) during their off hours.

In his book he talks about flying control line airplans while standing on the roof of the hanger at Scaled.  He said it was fun flying in the "other hemisphere".

  The field where they are flying the R/C proof of concept model is the old McDonnell-Douglas R/C Club field at what was call The Conductron Plant and where one of the Boeing missile plants is now. It's right at the intersection of I-370 and Highway 94 in St. Charles, MO. You can see the steel structure of the railroad bridge in the background of some of the shots. I went to ans watched several R/C pattern and scale contests at that site many years ago. Burt also pitched in and help out at the KidVenture C/L circles when it first started 12 or 13 years ago. Met him once and got his autograph while he was pre-flighting the Boomerang on the ramp at Oshkosh for the trip back to California. I had the pleasure of sitting in on one of his forums for his Spaceship One program a year or two before it flew and it was very cool. After he was finished speaking, I would have walked right out and got right on board the ship and took a flight without any reservation. He just impressed me with his confidence that they were going to get the job done and it all went off just like he said it would. Wish I had the money to buy a ticket with Virgin Galactic!!!

I would fly on anything Rutan built. 

Sir Richard on the other hand well...... not so much.

I like Richard, he always painted "AA+BA=No Way"on the side of his 747's and A-340's during the 15 years they tried to keep the unholy alliance from coming to fruition.
He also wanted to buy Air France's Concorde fleet once they retired them. Politics kept them from a free market sale. He wanted head to head competition with BA.
