NW Regionals change of status
« on: January 14, 2014, 01:10:52 PM »
For several months, Mike Hazel and I have been trying to arrange for a continuation of the Northwest Regionals as we have always known it.  Several sites have been looked at, and we finally zeroed in on the Salem, Ore., Airport.

Ever optimists, for a while we thought we would be able to put on a full Regionals on that site.  Ultimately, we were forced to face reality.  Even though the airport management gave us permission to use space for two circles on the tarmac, we were defeated by the logistics of crossing the fence into the active airport (security guards, periodically making way for cargo planes, lack of parking, etc.) and the difficulty of cramming a contest that has used seven circles down into four circles.

Therefore, we have made the hard decision to go a different direction for 2014.

Yes, there will be a Memorial Day Weekend contest at Bill Riegel Model Airpark in Salem, but it won't be the all-events Regionals as in the past.  The new contest will be the Northwest Stunt and Combat Championships.  For stunt and combat, it will be pretty much just like the traditional Regionals.  Unfortunately, we will not be able to host speed, racing, carrier or scale.

However, Mike does plan to host a major speed and racing meet in Salem on June 27-29; we're hoping that will take the place of the Regionals for those events.  We're not sure about carrier, but there's a possibility that carrier could be run in conjunction with that contest if the carrier folks are interested; that would be a matter of getting the deck to Salem and organizing that part of the event.

It's with great regret that we suspend the full Regionals for 2014; the loss of the Eugene site was just too much for us to overcome.  We hope everyone will be understanding about this change, and support the contests that we are planning to host to replace the Regionals as well as we can.

A flyer and entry forms for the stunt/combat meet will be online soon in the Flying Lines Where the Action Is section.

Bummer.

I can only imagine the amount of work that you and Mike must have put into this.  Even given that things didn't work out I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your hard work and dedication to the cause.

Here's hoping for a suitable venue in 2015!

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Thanks for all your hard work and time spend in what must have been a million meetings.

It makes me a little sad that it will not be the huge event that my boys and I went to last year, but at least we will have it. That said, is there a reason we couldn't have a two part Regionals? Stunt and combat Memorial Day, then speed/racing and carrier June 27-29. And hopefully we can make it one big event in the future.

If the Skyraiders will let me, I can bring the carrier deck down with me.

Yes, what Tim said. You guys do an amazing job. Please let Tim know what he can do to help! Ok, yes, me also.  I guess you won't call it "NW Regionals" until all the events can fly together on the same weekend, eh? OTOH, the NATS has been disected for years, yet they still call it "The NATS"...just a thought!

It happens that Gary Gingerich called yesterday, and it looks like he's "down" with it being in Salem. I reckon I'll pick him up at PDX on my way by on the 205, and drop him off again on my way back 'ome. Should be possible to make it work.  H^^ Steve

With general chaos being the order of the day with my business I hesitate to make any promises this far in advance -- but if I turn up on the day and seem to be chatting with Steve or otherwise wasting my time, feel free to collar me to do work.

Shagging score sheets at this Regionals should at least be easier than at prior ones!

See my comments on the Flying Lines NW forum about this.  Carrier is a possibility at the June 27-29 contest.

I think it was mentioned before, but the Salem site for the NW Regionals has just one paved circle (and a grass area for combat).

I understand the need to limit events.  Even so, the expected turnout for Beg/Inter/Advanced/Expert in Prec Acro will make it rough to get everyone onto one circle.

Previous Regionals were scheduled for 3 days.  Possibly, it might take 3 days just to run the Prec Acro events?

We discussed this at the NW Skyraider's meeting last night (John and Howard weren't there VD~ ), and the question came up whether this would mean a 2 day stunt contest, or would it remain at 3 days, Friday > Sunday?   H^^ Steve

Once again, I recommend people download the flyer from the Flying Lines site.  But to answer your question: This is a three-day contest.

Friday: OTS, Beginner, Intermediate
Saturday: Classic/N30, Advanced, Profile (it will be a long day)
Sunday: Expert

Subject to adjustment as we get a feel for the entry level.

I hereby volunteer to fly "Sister Jenny" for just two flights, as long as they count for both profile and Advanced.

Nah, if I wanted to be classic, profile, and advanced-legal I'd have to fly my Ringmaster.  I'm not good enough to fly a Ringmaster in advanced.

John,
just wanted to clarify, I understand the dilema you are facing, I appreciate all the work you guys have put in to keep this going
I was not trying to stir the pot,, it just caught me out that I would be doing ALL of my flying in one day,,
I appreciate all of the teams work to even have this event again after the crisis arising from loosing the airport site,,
again, thanks

That's an idea I'll endorse, Howard. Mark can fly his old Bf-109 in Expert. Yeah, that'll work for me!  y1 Steve
