Title: Brodaks Last day Saturday June 15
Post by: De Hill on June 15, 2013, 09:19:06 PM
Elwyn and I just checked in to a motel in scenic Clovedale, Indiana.  The Indiana department of highway repairs has I-70 messed up from 25 miles east of Indianapolis, through Indianapolis, and 55 miles west of Indianapolis.

The report on Brodak's last day will have to wait. I have had all the fun that I can stand today.

Ah, yes...summertime road repairs.  Remember them well when returning from Muncie several years ago.  Catch-up with you when you're rested.

Go figure, haven't those orange barrels been out on that stretch for like the past 15 years?

It does seem the road construction has been going on for a long time.   Even the last NATS I attended.   Does Elwyn share driving chores or do you do all the driving?   Anyway get home safe and sound, both of you.

4.Wrecking Crew
5.Dixie Whiz Kids ( Also known as the Memphis Mafia)
Jack Sheeks was on the DWK team. He stood there during the construction phase holding a large wooden cane with an eagle's head carved in the top. If he had worn a white robe, he would have looked like an old testament prophet who was getting ready to part..something!

It was chilly and foggy. The fog stretched from Waynesburg to Carmichaels. It wasn't raining,so  more people gathered upcourage and drove out into the grass parking lot. I sat and talked to Sparky and Doug Benedetti and Pete Hermans for a while. Sparky was a truck driver and a motorcycle mechanic for much of his life. He left around 9:30 am. I wonder if he made it back to Saint Louie sunday evening?

There is a lot of sitting and talking today. A lot of people have already left to make the long drive home. Most of them have completed their flights. 9:45: the winds are low, and the fog has burned off; some good flights are being burned in. There is some 1/2a scale flying taking place on the paved circle up on the hill.

There are 6 circles in John and Buzz Brodak's back yard. It is amazing that someone would open up their house and yard once a year for over a week just so some modelers can fly. I don't think John and Buzz make any money off of this; It has to cost them. The businesses in Carmichaels , Waynesburg and Uniontown do pretty good over that week, though.

Special Awards saturday, at Brodak's 2013

I saw people taking pictures of the scoreboards. Maybe someone can post the flight scores.

Philly Fliers: Most club members participation award.

Most entries: Paul Smith

Longest distance: Richard and Ricardo Martinez

The Oscar Award: Buzz Brodak for the the story she told last year about being attacked by a flier.
The flyer was actually covered in fur, and had wings!

Rusty Brown Award: Allen Brickhaus ( it was richly deserved)

Spirit of '52: Bob Zambelli for his ETA .29 powered Icarus jr. (He had already left)

Spirit of the Sport Award: Elwyn Aud. ( also richly deserved) When we got to Tulsa today after a long hard drive, we looked at Elwyn's award. It seems we took home a Spirit Award, but it was the Spirit of '52! ( remember, Bob Z left early!)

A big thank you was given to the stunt event director and co-CD Ken Armish

A lot of people were thanked, the pit bosses, the individual event directors, pull testers, runners, tabulators, trash emptiers  and mowers. The folks who pumped the porta pottys and replaced the tp deserved thanks also.

Brodak report

I arrived Friday and the first stop was the factory to select wood. Brodaks has a wall of wood to look through. They were happy to supply me with a scale. I spent 2 hours finding the lightest wood in the place. I found 1 block 3 inches by 2 inches by 36 inches that was 300 grams.. Score!

Back to the field. I ran into a guy selling Super tigers I bought 6 of those and a supertiger .51 2 Brodak .40Ty's and another guy had a G21 .46 I bought that. I sold most of the engines except 2. So all in all I ended up with 2 free engines as I just sold them for my cost.

I entered the raffle and won a Pat Johnson Bearcat and bought a Cavalier kit from Tom Morris Less fuse. The wing I built last night but I think I am going to do a beam wing for it as I am not sold on the millennium wing.

I choose to rough it and save the hotel costs. I slept on a cot in the garage. I love sleeping in the fresh air. Every night we ate at Hartley's. It was adequate, that all I can say about that.

Brodaks is a rolling green grass field with 6 circles with one paved. The air was quite bumpy on the doughnut but I managed to put in 10 flights on he CrossFire. I didn't want to chance flying it on the grass and ripping the wheelpants off,so I elected to fly the Continental insted.

It was my first time there and I am glad I went. Great time and if you never have gone I would suggest you do so quickly as it may not last much longer. While talking to John he said for sure (god willing) 3 more years and after that its on a year to year basis depending on how John Feels.

Allen Brickhaus and Ken Armish and the rest of the crew put on a well organized contest. I would like to Thank all involved for making a fun filled week of fun flying fellowship.

Doc,

I do all the driving; Elwyn takes and edits pictures in the van and provides commentary.

Elwyn's best quote on this trip.

Me: Where do you want to eat, Elwyn?

Elwyn: Anywhere except the Liver Hut.

I tried to think of what a liver hut would look like, and what the menu would be... yuch!!I dropped that thought quickly!

Hi Robert

Just out of curiosity...the Bearcat you won.  Is it the 55" span, 562 sq. in. Brodak kit ?  The reason I'm asking is cause I have one, but know that Pat Johnston has a couple different sets of plans out there for different size Bearcats, and wonder if you got one of those. Just cause I'm a Bearcat freak is why.  <=
