Brodak Shoestring on the board
« on: August 29, 2011, 08:59:34 AM »
I know its not stunt per say but it is a pretty good copy of the CG shoestring and I did loops with mine so that makes it a stunt plane for me!

HI David,

I really liked my Shoestring!  It was the first "big plane" I ever had.  I even mixed the "Chartreuse" from the formula on the plans. ;D

My flying buddy's Dad built his with the "clipped wing" that was on the original Goldberg plans, powered it with an OS .35 III with the venturi restricter removed.  It was very fast and a blast to watch him flying the pattern that fast! LOL!!

What engine are you going to use?

Good luck with yours, you will like it!

I have a couple of engines to choose from, ST35, Magnum 36, OS25 or a KB rear rotor 40, The wing/plane is designed from what I can see for Foxberg racing which means that even though it will do stunts probably not the best choice for a stunt machine.  I have a Goldberg Shoestring in Seattle at my brothers house with a EVO36 that flew nice so I'm hoping this one will fly as well as that one does.

HI David,

While looking over my Brodak Shoestring kit, it appears to be a carbon copy of the Goldberg kit, just slightly different construction.  It's about impossible to find shaped leading edges anymore that are "usable"!

The OS .25 will easily fly a decent weight Shoestring plus not need as much fuel which is good with the smallish tank area available.  I might end up using an OS .30S on mine.  If that isn't enough, the OS .35S fits in the same holes. ;D

Actually, the plane was designed as a sport/stunt plane...foxberg racing came later. Kept light the OS-25 would be a good choice. It is classic legal, I flew one at VSC 1 when I was getting back into the sport/hobby.  ;D

David

If it's not too late, a couple of suggestions. First, the root ribs were designed to sit at the dges of the fuselage plank and I space mine with scrap 3/8" balsa at the LE and TE to strengthen the joints that must occur there. I also put a piece of 3/8" square bearer material under the spar doublers and mount the bellcrank on a 1/8" wire post on the centreline of the spar and spacer. You need a washer as a spacer to retain the bellcrank pivot and I use a 4mm ID nylon washer. I also use 2-ply balsa for the shear webs each side of the bellcrank. You can see it all here.

I fly mine with an OS FP 20 which provides all the power you need for a stunt trainer.

I flew mine with a 1964 vintage Fox 25.  It flew real well too.  ;)

My original Shoestring was built using ALL Ambroid (Don't yell I learned) and used a Fox 35. The wreck was rebuilt with a EVO36 with good results.  Thanks for the photos of the center section as that is the part I was just getting to.  I do have a Larry Foster Fox that needs a good plane.

Over the years I have built at least 8 Goldberg Shoestrings.   Six for racing and also rebuilt a couple. Have not built the Brodak versions yet.  Yours is looking good.   H^^

Have also had the Cosmic Wind and the Buster.  My son won several trophies flying the Buster in Slow Rat years ago.jeh

HMMMM--  Looks like an old Veco or Froom spinner.  Like Ole Doc, I too have built many of the Shoestring planes both for just funning around as well as racing.  That one looks like a mighty fine job.  I just may have to get one of the Brodak versions.
