Although the airplane was designed for carrier it also makes for a cool semi-scale sport airplane that's fun to fly and looks really cool in the air. If built for fun/sport leave all the embedded carrier hardware off and build it as light as possible. An FP-15 is the perfect engine if you build it for sport.
The back story....
Some time ago I renewed my interest in Navy Carrier but wanted to build an airplane that I actually worked with when I was in the Navy. To make a long story short I decided on the FJ-4 Fury. I kinda got carried away with the original and added all kinds of monkey motion gadgets and details. It was a 35 size profile that was really more standoff scale than a competitive carrier airplane.
Even though the first version was too big to really be competitive, it proved the concept that a swept wing airplane would work and could be made competitive. At the time my understanding was that 15 carrier is suppose to be an entry level event so back to the drawing board to design a 15 sized version of the FJ-4. Between myself and other club members, four were built from the original plans and two went to Brodaks in 2012 to compete in 15 carrier. I ended up not flying due to a prop and fingers incident but Joe Gilbert placed 1st with the FJ-4 in 15 carrier.
To make another long story short, John Brodak decided to kit the 15 size Furry and I just received an example out of the first kit run. I posted my first thoughts on the kit and a couple photos in the Carrier section.
