Header is to high
« on: November 25, 2014, 08:10:41 PM »
It looks like my header is to tall and the pipe will not belly up to the plane. Can I bend the header or do I need to order something different?
First experience with a RE engine.
Thanks for the help.

If its a small amount you can bend it. However I recommend getting the right one.

Several options - you can bend the tube, you can file a wedge on the flange, or you can get a lower-rise header.

Hi Paul,
Measure from the center of the exhaust port up to the center of an imaginary header that would sit where you need it to be and see what you need in inches.  They're typically available in 1/4 inch increments from straight to about 1 3/4 inches.  I doubt that anyone would have all those things in stock but the most popular ones are (I think) 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 inches.  I typically use 1 1/2 inch.   I have  a couple at 1 inch and 3/4 inch but I've never been able to fit them in a stunter due to clearance with the tank.  You don't want the header to be too close to the tank or there may be fuel heating problems.  I always use 1/8 inch light ply between the header and the tank and then you need space to adjust the height of the tank and all that adds up to needing about 1 1/2 inches or more rise on the header...more if you use a 1 1/4 in high tank like I usually do.
If you can't fit all that in you might consider just increasing the depth of the fuselage so that you can.  You need access to the tank/pipe area to fiddle with pipe length etc.  If everything is tight in there it becomes very difficult to take the pipe/tank etc out or move the tank around...this stuff is critical and can make the difference between a well working system or one that you just can't get right!  Sorry I don't mean to lecture...but it is important if you want it to be successful.

There's a reason that most good pipe ships have deep fuselages.  What airplane and engine are you using?

Paul,

Can you post a pic of what you have going on?

Or give some details of your plane/engine combo you are using.

Thanks
Doug

Thanks guys. I really appreciate all the input. This will be another learning experience for me.
I want to kind of keep the plane under wraps. Just want to unveil it on its wheels in a few months. But here is the nose. It's a 40 size kit.

Thanks again.

Paul,
Looks like you are close for either of two choices. One is to adjust the cowl and fuse depth to just cover the header, the pipe connector could allow the tail of the pipe to tuck into the aft fuse close to the wing. Second option is as Randy said get a header with less rise. Before you change things I would connect the pipe and see how it laid out. Once you have a rear mount selected you can complete the fuse design.

One thing to consider, try to keep the pipe as low to the wing as possible to keep the vertical CG closer to the wing centerline. This avoids having the ship roll in from the low VCG. This has been one of the issues that takes some trim skills as both the engine torque and the low VCG team up to roll the ship in (assuming a counter clockwise setup). A reverse clockwise running engine would really help this, but I have not seen any mods available for the PA's (or other stunt engines, OK except the Fox 35 - there is a reverse crankshaft for it).

Best,      DennisT

Looking at it, I would put a dowel in the end of the header and bend it toward centerline a bit. You don't seem all that far off, but that may be the angle of the pic.

Great info guys. Thanks H^^

One thing I forgot to mention. I have to raise the crutch 1/8 in.  It's sitting flush in the picture. So that brings things up a little more.

Before I try and adjust this new header I am looking to trade this one. Post up in classified section.

It looks like it has already been bent. The straight section doesn't look like it is perpendicular to the flange.

No. Not yet.  After talking to a experience person he said it will be very difficult to bend correctly.
Chances are I will sell this one to have funds to get a shorter one.

It's not hard, I have done it lots of times. But that wasn't my point, my point was that it doesn't look quite right in the picture, even straight out of the package.

Here the engine with the used header muffle. It is bent just like the new one.
I think they both have a 1.5 in rise. I think I need a 1.25 or less.
