Sparky great video a nice way to be connected to something you cant participate to. Thanks for doing that for us. One request is to raise the camera when you take video of flights because the way it was set you see half the screen with grass and the flight is not on screen. Thanks again.

Profile Intermediate had two juniors and one senior amongst a total of 14 competitors. 13 yr old Luca Alimov posted a high score of 486.5, leading as of the end of the second round.
He picked up the handle for the first time in August of last year (2018). First loop by mid -August, full beginner pattern by mid- September, full AMA pattern by late October. An estimated 100+ patterns flown between October and May. He is looking forward to his first Nats.

Yes, we are related.  He is my ultimate, high- zoot stunt project of a lifetime.

Mike,

Congratulations to Luca and the rest of your family team supporting him on his accomplishments with flying and his victory.  Much appreciate the camaraderie and assistance you rendered to fellow competitors launching, bringing planes to and from the pits, some of them with IC slime, etc.  But there is more to the story, the rebuild, which I'll attempt to tell.  Please correct if I missed any aspect.

The day before was quite windy, so Mike and team waited until 8 PM to fly, looking for a calm moment.  However, Luca crashed, burying the electric motor and taking out the ESC.  Not to be denied an opportunity, Mike cleaned the dirt out of the motor, then installed and programmed a borrowed ESC.  Mike mentioned that he planned to test fly before the 745 AM pilot's meeting, finding out that field rules prohibit that.  Further pressing forward, they formed and executed a plan to practice at a local school, launching their effort at 0530.  When it's that early, its no longer 530 AM, it becomes 0530.

Luca's flying is great.  He is a cool, confident pilot, with outstanding timing on the bottoms and clearly defined shapes.  Good luck to Luca as he continues.

Peter

Thanks to the Brodak family, organization, officials, fellow competitors and supporters for what is transpiring as a great event, continuing with PA later in the week.  The commercial drink coolers on pallets, 50 cents for a pop, are symbolic to me on how well thought out and executed all aspects of this event show themselves.  Field is in great shape.

I couldn't make it again this year, but it's great to see old friends competing and even better to see all the new names I don't know!

[snip]
... Luca crashed, burying the electric motor and taking out the ESC. ... [snip]

Thank you for the nice write up, Peter.  I want to set the record straight, however:  Luca did not crash, taking out the ESC; instead, the ESC quit on him while going inverted in a wingover.  He didn't want to land inverted risking the rudder (the plane was a borrowed one), so he attempted to recover.  When the ESC did the same trick in the second attempt (again, inverted laps), Luca recovered using the remaining plane speed to pull out in a half-loop and land.  This is the same Edge Lite 50 that was doing similar tricks in another airplane, but I guess I didn't learn my lesson then.  Will be contacting Castle Creations upon our return.

Mike,

Thanks for correcting.  Now I understand the ESC failure led to the crash.  Great job of getting it all back together.
