Title: Brodak Crystal Clear
Post by: Dan Berry on June 30, 2021, 09:14:21 AM
I might remember reading somewhere that Crystal Clear wasn't real fuel proof.
I'm needing to know if it's up to the job on a FF Gas plane. I only need it for the covering (tissue). I don't have enough of anything else for the current project and don't have time nor do I care to spend any money on the plane. I have plenty of the 9unopened) Crystal Clear.
I don't need super-galactic fuel proof but it needs not soften immediately.

Thanks for indulging me.

My experience with Brodak Crystal Clear has not been very good.  Although others did not have this problem, I noticed that the gloss disappeared when raw fuel touched it.  Wiping off the fuel also removed the gloss.  I have no idea if it was softened as well.  I did not try any other experiments with it after that.

I also had it turn an ugly brown in short order.  When the dope arrived, I opened both cans to see if it was truly crystal clear.  It was.  Several months later, when I went to use it, it had turned an ugly brown.  I disposed of it, not wanting to take any chances.

I have no idea if opening the cans then resealing allowed some contaminant to enter and cause the discoloration.  No other dope I have had did that so I wonder about the formulation of the Brodak Crystal Clear.

Dan...The old 'Tuff' fuel proofer sold by Victor Stanzel was liquid vinyl.
If you could find the vinyl somewhere it would work well over dope.
Everyone used it a lot.

My experience with Brodak crystal clear is that when raw fuel gets on it, it dulls right away. Also, when i buy it and use it right away it is very clear. If the crystal clear sits in the shop a few months it is a yellow to rusty brown tint...gene

Ya gotta love those non catalyst top coats which are 100% fuel proof.

I'm intrigued, Charles.

Can you briefly describe or name the NON-catalyst, 100% top coats?
My butyrate dope supply is running low/old.

Thanks in advance,
