Has anyone built or is anyone building a Brodak Corsair? I love war planes and the Corsair has always been one that interests me but I have always been a little intimidated by the wing. I got the plans for the Sheeks Corsair years ago but decided it was over my head as far as a scratch built project goes. My understanding is that the Brodak kit does not use flaps but the Sheeks version did use small flaps as I remember.

Brodak makes two sizes of Corsair's, a small profile one that replicates the old JRoberts Carrier planes, about 38" span and then a larger one for stunt flying. I have the original JRoberts corsair and a Sterling kit as well. Both have main and trailing spars that give the shape of the wing and then the leading edge is pre machined in the kits for the curve. You could do the same ofr a scratch kit probably. Some plans trade the curve for an angle to make it easier to build which is ok....but I like the profile of the curve for the Corsair wing

I don't think Brodak produces the smaller Roberts Corsair anymore.

I have the orginal proto type Brodak profile Corsair, that Pat Johnston designed and built, which is the basis for the Brodak built up version as well. It has no flaps and flies really well. Saito .40 for power, "Thunder Tiger" prop like all have suggested and the plane flies great. Pat desinged this plane around the LA .46 and that is what was on it when I got it. It flew fine, but I have a thing for the Saito .40, its just personal preference. Nice thick airfoil, rocks n' rolls in the wind, but still flies great. Profile has lots of side area, doesn't seem to bother anything. I'd say go for it, you won't be disappointed. Plus there are endless paint schemes for the plane. Pat even has the Super Corsair plans available, just to tease you a bit. Gerald Schamp

I even have scaled up the full bodied version for 700 inches if a person is a Corsiar maniac. Do not be deceived, the flaps are totally not necessary. I'll paste on some PDF files for gandering purposes of the 40/46 sized full bodied version.

That is extremely cool Pat. I ordered a Corsair kit from Brodak that should be here by Wednesday. I'm still trying to finish up my new plane but the Corsair will be my primary winter project. Pat I also have to say I think its great that you have designed so many cool stunters around the LA 46 engine. I have 2 LA 46's and have adopted your setup for the engine. I am also able to get a full pattern in on 3.5 oz of fuel (Sig 20% castor/5% nitro) with 2oz of Sig castor added to the gallon. I can't wait till Brodak releases your built up Mustang.

Pat, was kind enough to blow his plans to 700" and i am in the process of building it without flaps per the plans, man is 700" big. I would post pictures, but don't have a camera or know how to put them on this forum. I was going to pipe it but Pat said that might ruin the looks, so ROjett .90 with header muffler, if it will fit within cowl and i think it will, but tight. The plans are outstanding as usual with Pats plans and not, not a beginner project, but with a few planes under your belt just a fun project. You must watch the weight a little, use good wood and everything will be ok.

Doesn't RSM sell a built-up Mustang (Pat Johnston) already?

I have a Brodak Corsair I've started, but honestly I'm just doing sub-assemblies right now - crutch, fuse, stab. Haven't even looked at the wing. From what I see of the plans it uses rods as a building guide/ jig. Shouldn't be any harder than a conventional wing. LOTS of room in the nose for ANY powerplant!

Yes, RSM does have Pats P-51 and his P-40 and I considered those and the Brodak Bearcat before deciding on the Corsair. I have a Brodak Spitfire kit for a future build sometime down the road but I really like Mustangs and Corsairs. The RSM Mustang looks great but it is a little larger than the other designs and Pat says he has a Mustang in the works for a Brodak kit. It was a tough choice between the RMS Mustang and the Brodak Corsair but I have always wanted a Corsair and even though its not as close to scale as Pat's designs I already have a Sig Mustang hanging on the wall. Truth be told I want to build all of them. These kits are just right up my alley. They are designed around the OS LA 46 engine, which can be had for less than $100.00 and they are warbirds with modern airfoils and moments. They seem to be a great option for a modeler on a budget who is also a warbird freak.

The RSM Mustang is a 600+ incher for the LA46 or larger. The airfoil is from Charles Mackey "Lark". That was the basis for my larger 626" Mustang (June 2006, MA). The M626 has a more scale-like fuselage and my Bearcat/Mustang airfoil. Flies spectacularly.
The Brodak Mustang is scaled down to the 560 square inch range and is very specifically designed for the LA46. That will produce gobs of torque for the size of plane. The result is a totally fun and competitive plane.
Rick, I'm gratified that you followed my suggestions on the LA46 setup and are getting a 3.5 ounce fuel consumption. That is the idea. An engine which will do what it does on 3.5 ounces of fuel is a bargain.

The Corsair kit came today and man this is one sweet looking bird. Its hard to believe just how far these kits have come with lazer cut parts and all the super nice hardware, a real bargain for the price. I do have one question though and I must admit I have not read the instruction booklet but how do use a muffler with the nose being so wide?

I think that John Brodak is making longer mufflers available for this one. I have used a length of Dubro muffler extension stock and longer bolts in the past. What engine are you planning on this? If a FP/LA, then Eric of RSM has some tongue mufflers which are pretty long and shoud get the outlet holes out of the cowl.

Pat, I'm going to use an LA 46. I have an extension that I got from Tower a couple of years back that I think was for an FP so it should fit the OS muffler but I also have an OS header that fits the LA because at one time I considered trying a pipe on a profile Cardinal with the LA 46. I should be able to come up with something. I was just curious if you had a particular muffler in mind for the Corsair and Bearcat if you intend to use the LA 46.

There is also a Pitts Muffler (Tower has them for the LA/FP 40) although meant for a side mounted engine it could be used.

Two questions:

First,... the Mustang that Brodak will be coming out with sounds very appealing to me. I've been running LA46 engines in my Dixon Cardinal, Brodak profile Cardinal, and my Vector 40. My question is, will the new Brodak Mustang be the 'B' or 'D' version? Personally I like the 'B' version much better and that would be my choice.

Second question,... How do you get an LA46 to run on 3.5 ounces of fuel?? All my LA46 engines needed just a bit more than four ounces to get through the pattern. In fact I asked Brodak to custom build 4.25 ounce wide wedge ATF tanks for me.

Steve, I could probably get the pattern in on 3.25oz but I use 3.5 and then get 6 or 8 laps after the clover. When I was running the LA 46 stock I was using 4.5oz but I started getting much better fuel milage after changing to a 7mm OS venturi (I think thats right), ST needle assembly, APC 12.25X 3.75 prop and Sig 5/20 (half castor,half synthetic) fuel with 2oz of Sig castor added to the gallon. I also changed to an FP metal backplate, I still use the stock OS muffler and a plastic clunk tank on muffler preasure and I set the engine just on the rich side of being ready to break into a 2 cycle. I don't own a tach so I have no idea what the actual RPM's are. I ran the engine stock for a long time but started to have problems with run away last summer. Thats when I made these changes based on Pats and others postings.

Mileage is relatively simple. Venturi in the .265" to .275" range with the 4mm (ST) NVA and 5% fuel with 22-24% oil. The 12 1/4 X 3 3/4 APC is a great prop. There you go.

I spoke with Mr. Brodak at the AMA last evening while some of us were practicing for the FCM contest this weekend. I told him my plans to build the Brodak Corsair this winter and he confirmed that he was having muffler extensions made for the Corsair and Bearcat. I was also excited to here that the P-51 (full fuse) should be on the market by the end of the year along with an ME 109 and possibly an Italian or French fighter.

I am really interested in the Mustang that Brodak will be offering latter on this year. Does anyone know if it will be a "B" or "D" version?? I checked the Brodak website and they have a bubble canopy offered for kit number CLB-79; therefore that probably answers that question. Does anyone have any additional information?

Steve, I wish I had asked Mr. Brodak which Mustang version the kit will be but my guess is the D. We talked about the warbirds (built up fuse) kits and I told him how much I like the series and he said " If you like the warbirds, you will love the Mustang". I am also looking forward to the ME 109.

The Mustang is another 560 inch plane based on my Mustang 626. At 560 inches, this puts it in the range perfect for a 40-46 sized engine. My larger Mustang is a total sweetheart to fly. This one should be as good as there is for an LA46.
I don't know about a Me109. I have not drawn one up as yet. My buddy Mark Scarborough has a 635 incher for a Magnum 53 which will be great when finished. That could be reduced to a 560 incher...

Pat, I didnt ask but I wondered at the time if Mr. Brodak meant to say FW 190 not ME 109 because we were talking about mufflers for the radial engine designs when he mentioned it. He did say he had been working on some other projects but he wanted to get the P-51 kit out by the end of the year. He also said he wanted to kit a French or Italian design but he didn't say which one.

I started the sub-assemblies and one thing led to another, so I'm deep into building up the Fuse and fitting a Saito .40 and 4 oz. round Sullivan clunk tank.
There is a problem with former "K" not being cut for 5 stringers, instead it's missing the cutout for the 2 lower stringers and also the plan is drawn wrong on the piece part. No big deal, just notch it for the stringers.
Cowl pieces for the nose ring are 2 ea. 1/2" halves instead of 4 ea. 1/4" pcs. Thing is, it comes up a little short diameter-wise so I shimmed it 1/8" when gluing to the ply ring.
Inverted Saito fits nice!, the tank will be tight, lots of head scratching left on mounting & plumbing. Be carefull with the crutch, the plans show the engine hanging in space by a 1/8" so I' assuming it's for 1/8" engine mount pads. Crutch formers "B,C,D" are cut for use without pads. IOW- if you use pads, trim the formers 1/8".
