Brodak Spinner on a LA .46???
« on: April 04, 2011, 09:14:04 PM »
So I ordered this spinner.

Not sure it is going to work on my LA .46.

Anyone know how this works. Do I use the nut and divest the prop nut and washer on the engine?

That is like the old Veco spinners.  If memory serves me right,  assemble:

Backplate,

Prop,

Washer,

Extension nut,

Extension stud, (cut to fit)

Spinner,

Nose-piece.

However, the package looks like it has instructions on it.  You could always call Brodak and ask if the parts don't seem to fit.

Back plate on first.
Install prop.
Prop washer next.
Prop nut/extension next. Index prop and tighten.
Spinner over prop against back plate.  You may need to enlarge the cutouts on the spinner for the prop you're using.  Dremel tool works well.  Take your time.
Spinner nut with all thread next.

All thread can be shortened if the spinner nut won't tighten.

Remove the prop nut and washer from your engine and use the nut and washer included with the spinner. You should not have to cut the 1/4-28 bolt attached to the spinner tip. You will have to do some work on the cutouts to make them fit you selected prop. make sure that your prop does not touch the edges of the spinner when it is installed.

...and yes, with the new spinner and hardware you do not use the engines original prop nut or washer.

Install the new spinner backplate, prop and new washer. Then install the prop nut/adapter and this will center the new prop washer for you. TIGHTEN the prop nut/adapter as you would the original nut and washer. Install the spinner and finally the "pointy" spinner screw. Just get the pointy screw nice and snug, DON'T overtighten it, all it does is hold the spinner nosecone on.

Paul, I highly suggest using a touch of grease on the crankshaft threads before you assemble. I've had 2 of them pull the threads right out. In addition to prevent slipping, I also suggest putting a disc of sand paper between the driveplate and the backplate. I use the Great Planes stick um paper for the aluminum extruded sanding blocks. I cut two circles approx  1" with the crank hole in the center and stick them back to back. Even though both parts have knurling on them they will slip. This is why one of mine pulled the threads out due to trying to tighten the prop nut. I'm not referring to the spinner locknut as stated above, but the  actual prop nut that's provided. The sandpaper will stop the slippage. I currently have one  on a LA.40 and the slipping was most recognizable on startup. I would get a backfire now and then which would cause the prop and spinner to turn. Also, take your time to see the cutouts within the spinner aren't  touching your prop near the hub. This can be a bit tricky when trying to use APC props. I was able to wedge the prop somewhat in the spinner and scribe around it using a fine line Sharpie. This enable me to work at it a little at a time to get the fit I desired. I then undercut the openings with a fine rat tail file. If I may make another suggestion while were at it, cover your spinner with several layer of masking tape during the filing process. When you slip with the rat tail or needle file you won't scratch your spinner. Ken

Sometimes it is hard to get the prop washer to grip well on the spinner backplate.  One trick I've seen is to insert coarse sandpaper washer between them. It helps if it is thick enough to "crush" a bit and conform to the knurls on both surfaces.

actually you DO need to trim the spinner tip bolt - unless you can find a prop that is thinner at the hub then any of the props that are currently manufactured, as it is manufactured - the bolt is about 1/4" too long.

I would highly recommend changing the aluminium prop nut to one of the Higley steel ones too

Paul,

Actually, that spinner will not work on the LA 46; however, I do have some Goldberg spinners that will work perfectly.  Bring the Brodak spinner out to our fun-fly this Saturday and I will trade you a couple of Goldberg spinners for it.  Let me know what color and size you need.

I am another one who has used the Brodak spinner pictured on an LA46 in a Vector for several years. I use the APC 11.5 x 4 or 12.25 x 3.75, which has such a wide blade at the root that the cutout needs to be enlarged with a file (as noted above) for the spinner to fit. I use a 2" diameter spinner, while it appears yours is 1.75". Not sure that will make any difference. I have not had to trim the alloy prop nut as others mention doing. This setup should work just fine and eliminates having to line up backplate screw holes with the spinner and losing tiny screws in the grass.

they may have changed the length of the bolt then - I bought some of the first ones when they came out in '05?? - sure had a long bolt then.

I'm also not a big fan of the aluminum washer/nut, tho it depends on what aluminum they are made from. Generally, I'll use a steel extension nut, or in the case of this type spinner, a coupler nut from the hardware store will git 'er done.  ~>

As for the spinner backplate/prop driver slippage...JB Weld them together. If you have to take them apart, heat will work, with no damage to either part.   Sneaux level is down to 2,000 ft. today.  010! Steve

As Steve says,  J-B Weld the thrust washer to the spinner back plate and save your self some grief.  Also don't over tighten the adapter nut.   H^^
