Title: Brodak .40 chip muffler anyone
Post by: Ted Fancher on January 22, 2017, 05:47:58 PM
So I'm trying to get my 1976 Nats Moby Dick back in the air for VSC Super '70s.  As there was an obvious reasonn for the name "Moby Dick" I wanted a bit more oomph for the altlitude and heat in Tucson.  A Brodak .40 fits like a glove in the original OS 35S mounts and only extends the spinner about 3/16" which is in the acceptable noise range for such a project.  Only downside I've found is that with the original muffler the CG is a little forward of where I would like it...plus, it's not the prettiest looking critter hanging out the side.

Can anyone recommend a high quality Chip Muffler for the B.40 from one of our garage outfitters?

Ted

Polish up a muffler from Eric at RSM.  I have one permanently JB Welded to my Brodak 40.  With the ball socket wrench I use don't have to remove muffler to install or remove the 40.

Pete Peterson has a collection and I can make one easily enough.

Eric's tongue muffler has been the best choice on my two OTS planes w/ Brodak 40s

Randy Smith's tongue muffler works great. You can also alter the holes if needed by drilling them out to the next size. The RSM version has very small holes in which you really can't open up a whole lot without breaking into the next hole. Your alternative is to either make another row or use the existing as a drill guide and go out the opposing side.

Thanks guys.  I've ordered one from Eric and should get it in a day or two.

The Du-Bro line of spinners cover up the open space between the nose and backplate more than others, you probably already know that, they are pretty sturdy!  D>K
