Brodak 40 and OS-46
« on: December 20, 2012, 10:01:05 PM »
Does anyone know if these two engines have the same mounting dimensions?

As far as mounting dimensions, they're extremely close if not the same. I didn't do any actual measuring, but I just recently made a swap from the Brodak .40 to an LA .46 on my Brodak Zero profile model. It bolted right into place but the shaft length is a bit longer. By memory it's about a 1/4" without going downstairs to the shop right now to look. That length didn't matter at all in this case, but it would be if spinner gap is a concern. The case width on the .46 is just a tad wider between the mounting flanges too but on my Zero it still slipped into place, just lightly grazing the mounting beams.

BTW, using the same Pro-Zinger 11x5 prop and Sig Champion 10% fuel the Zero has plenty of "oomph" now, even down at 8500-9000 RPM compared to being a little underpowered at any useable setting with the Brodak. It may have been a little overloaded with that prop on the Brodak but it was happier than with some others I had tried on it. In any case the .46 runs great and I now have some "reserve" power, where I had none before. y1

I have Vector 40 setup originally for B40 but swapped in 46LA with no problem. Engine weights are different so had to rebalance slightly.  Both engines run the11x 4.5 inch grey color ThunderTig
?re Cyclone prop with 22%  Powermaster either 5% or 10%.  46LA set up by Byron with Hyflo tube muffler.

I was using (and happy) with both the Zinger 11x5 & 11x4 props on my LA 46 powered TT. Bob Swan finally forced me to try his 12.25x4.5 Bolly. It was a night and day difference. With the Bolly I dropped my lap speed by a .4 seconds and kept excellent line tension up top. I just ordered 3 props from Brian E; something I didn't think I would be doing.

He is no longer making pipes, but still makes props.  Contact him at: brianea@optusnet.com.au He will be at the Aus Nats in early January, so there may be a temporary delay. His price list is attached.

BE will make props, but will not finish them...and I got some from him via our Sekrit Agent Man. I heard that he'd still make pipes, but I don't know that from personal experience. It was the filing and sanding that was giving him problems.  y1 Steve

Yep, in his email he told me that he sends them complete with flashing. Oh well, a little sanding and balancing will be in order.

It seems all answers are in however, just for interest sake the OS LA/FP series are approximately 3/16" longer in the crankcase than the Brodak 40.
Also, the Brodak .40 will fit straight in from wenst the OS 35S series came from, which may come in handy.
Merry XMAS to you all. (no political correctness here) !!!!!

It still takes less time to clean up than a "finished" Bolly used to. I use a perma-grit file to get the majority of it off, which takes about 2 minutes. But be careful near the tips.

Thanks, I will. I'm hoping that Bob Swan will look over my shoulder, and keep me in check.
