You want the 110-lb test clips, get a 10-pack of silver and a 10-pack of black, and you have color-coded clips.

Apparently the AMA did away from the rule that specified steel?

Straphangers are not going to find "gotchas", give it up already.

Neither of the traditional types of clips (the Luxon "slider clips" or the scissors type/McRosco snaps) have ever been steel, and as far as I know the clips themselves (along with the leadouts and handle construction {with the one exception...) have been specified. I am not sure what grade of brass or bronze they might be but they have zero history of material failure. Luxon clips are notorious for the slider sliding and then opening up.

The only rule about clips is that you can't use swivels.

Only recently the "Hello Kitty" and other homemade/cottage industries clips have been steel.

I have several ,what I believe to be steel because they get picked up by a magnet, Luxor slider clips. And some that don't get attracted to a magnet.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

The slider on the Luxon clips was usually steel.

In any case, Peasbody's attempted "gotcha" is moot.

The black one is also brass but not sure what it's coating is.

Black stuff.  Hope this helps.

This is a good find. The Sullivan clips are expensive and often out of stock. The Brodak version of the Lexon clip is inferior. The lock slide doesn't usually work and they don't compress as well.

I have often wondered about the idea that the Luxon ones can be "opened" on flight, and that maybe in actuality, they just were not closed properly or at all.  Before the scissors/McRosco units became prevalent, I played around with trying to make that happen on purpose and never could even get them to hang up. A guy gets into a bit of a hurry to fly and just doesn't pay attention to that little detail. I have put on the McRosco type in a hurry and didn't get them completely engaged but caught it later when running the lines out, and have seen it done by others. I haven't tried the hello Kitty clips since I an well stocked on the others but I imagine that any type are capable of being applied improperly. I have purchased some of the ones from LurePartsOnLine and they seem to be excellent quality. Some of the others I have had in the past have gotten "sprung" and didn't close correctly so I tossed those. Those in Brett's link aren't too difficult to open and go back t their closed position very positively. You just can't use them on a hard point handle without a larger hole.
  Type at you later,

I used slider clips for years.
In my 'youth', it was discovered that the ends would loose a little tension after many uses and open up when stressed while flying.
Ringmaster Combat and the like....
By slightly bending the ends 'open' they clicked onto the slider firmly.
However, when the scissor type became available, I switched.
'Hello Kitty' clips are the ones I presently use because of the small increments of length they provide.
Great care must be used when using/installing ANY line clips.
STAY SAFE & "Tight Lines!" H^^

The last time I bought lines from Brodak, the packages included the Luxon type connectors.  But, these connectors were cheap versions.  The wire diameter is smaller.  The slider will not lock into place all the time and it can sometimes be moved without first pressing on the wire to clear the lock nub.  Thus, it can open unintentionally and with the flimsy wire this can be disastrous.

Older versions of the Luxon clip were much better.   The "scissor" type connectors are even better but the thimble can hang up on the narrow end.  I now use home made connectors from 0.050 stainless wire and bend them to required length using that nifty bending jig.

Hello everyone,
I have just received the message from Brodak that the X-Large connectors with steel slider have been discontinued and Brodak does not have any of them in stock.
They still have smaller sizes.

I am switching to SIG "scissors" style, 110 Lbf. steel wire connectors.

Happy Summer Flying,

M
