Elwyn and I ate breakfast at the Microtel free spread. It was the best motel breakfast that we have seen. The Waynesburg Microtel is an excellent motel and we highly recommend it. We arrived at the field around 8:15 am.
and attended the pilot's meeting. The weather prediction was wind, and very low chance of rain. The weathermen had it right about wind, but they totally screwed up on the rain and the chill.
There was beacoup rain and it was chilly.

We drove around the field and looked at the different kinds of old time stunters. We saw the following: Icarus jr.,
Smoothy, Ringmaster, Viking,F-51 Mustang, Big Job,El Diablo, Black Tiger, and a Galloping Comedian.

Elwyn and I presented some awards :

The Red Reinhart award: A walnut plaque with a Red's favorite prop, a 10-6 Power Prop mounted.
It was awarded to Keith Morgan and his Galloping Comedian with Fox .35 power.

The Mirror Meet Award: A sun helmet painted white with a black MM airplane on the front.
Awarded to Bub Reese for his Fox .35 powered Sterling F-51.

The KK McClure award: A U-Reely originally belonging to Keith McClure was awarded to Will Davis for being the person that he is.

Jack and Shirley Sheeks showed up, set up a table, and started selling stuff. Some was for the Indy club, and some was for Jack. The wind and the rain finally drove them away later in the afternoon.

Thunder was heard about 9:30 am, and the CD, Allen Brickhouse cancelled flying for 45 minutes. He had to repeat the cancellations once or twice more. the rain put a damper on many things. However, there were some fashion statements made with the differing styles of women's golashes.

The rain continued on and off through the day. Appearance judging ocurred in the rain at 3 pm, much to the dismay of all.

OTS finally finished, and the combat guys started having matches. They ain't scared of no rain!!

Memorial Service at 5 pm.

Allen Brickhaus conducted a moving memorial service for those who have went west in the last year. They are:

Clayton Berry, Leroy Ducharme, Dale Kirn, Jerry Leuty, Bill Northrup, Howard Pardue, Walt Prey, Dave Reyes, Don Still, Lance smith, Larry Cunningham, Bill Heyworth, Jim Morway and Mike Donovan. Many of these guys were friends of mine; it is sad to see them pass.

Joan Donovan and her children, Sharon, Mike, Theresa, Paul, and Susan came up to Carmichaels from Vicksburg, Mississippi for the memorial service.  Mike Donovan really loved the Brodak Fly-In.

A white Piper J-3 Cub made a pass over the field, He was supposed to make two passes and drop Mike Donovan's ashes over the field, but the winds were so bad he couldn't do it. His ashes were brought back to the field and given to his family, who spread Mike's ashes out on the east side of the field.

Dan Banjock flew an OTS  flight of a Galloping Comedian to finish up the ceremony. the Galloping Comedian was one of Mike Donovan's favorite airplanes.

To that I add Jim Morway who mentioned in the ceremony.  1947 (circa) through 2013. Combat & stunt.   Many contests in Michigan, Ontario, and Ohio.  1980 Nats at Wilmington.  Blew an engine in Fast Combat, swapped it out and still won.

Jim dropped out of combat due to medical issues and became a famous airbrush artist in stunt.  Europa and 911 were his masterpieces.

De and Elwyn,

I really appreciate your work.  It makes me wish I were there but I won't make it this year.  If Gary Lutz is there,  I would like him to call me.  I sent De a PM.  Again, thanks for the good work.

Thanks from the old DOC also to you two for making us feel like we are there.   Hope to see all in Tulsa later this year.  No promises.
