Brodak's Friday, Day 4 of the contest, June 14, 2013
« on: June 14, 2013, 06:47:35 PM »
Elwyn and I arrived at the field at 8 am. It was foggy, chilly and muddy. Many of the cars and trucks parked across the road from Brodak's property in  the campground rather than chance the mud and ooze of the parking lot. We braved it, stayed on the grass climbed the hill, turned 90 degrees and zoomed into a parking place.

I walked by the registration tent and found Sandy Bruce in charge. Helping her were Anna Noska and Charley Ward. They are in charge of Score sheets, the scoreboards, tabulation, T shirt sales and information. The airplane weigher was Coby McFayden.

I walked around the Advanced /Expert pits and met Gary Lutz and Joe Adamusko whom I had heard about for years. Both were flying Stuntresses which is a very pretty design. I also met a lot of guys whose names I didn't catch or just forgot!

Walking through the Advanced pits, I saw the following designs: SV- 22, Scorpio, Thunderbirds 1 & 2, Oriental, Skyliner, Snorer, Cavalier, Zap Machine, BJ, Bucks 550, and the SV-11.

Expert pits: P-40, Thundergazer, Stuntress, Bobcat, Olympic, Fortune, Volunteer, Legacy, Dream Girl, and Juno.

Intermediate pits: Cavalier, Time Machine, P-40, Banshee, Cardinal, Vector, Pathfinder, and the Stilletto 660.

A lot of the stunters had already been taken back to the owner's car.

Spent some time talking to Henry Nelson about Charles Lindberg, The Lone Eagle. Henry said that some of the stories that have surfaced about Lindberg's activeties after world war 2 are quite interesting. I will say no more, but I'll suggest you google Lindberg.

I spent some time talking to Jack and Shirley Sheeks. They are greatly entertaining to talk to; especially when Larry Scarinzi shows up. I have watched Larry buy things from people, and he gets stuff cheap. When I try to use his methods, they don't work for me. I guess this is because I am an Okie, and Larry is a slick Yankee. Larry also gave me a gag gift to give to Ruby; He has done this for years.

There is a whole lot of controline stuff for sale at Brodak's; I think it is all G rated.

The weinie wagon tried to close at 1:30 pm, but the crowd kept it open till 2:30!

Scale Entries:

Profile Scale: 6
1/2a scale: 7
Sport Scale: 4
Fun Scale: 8

Elwyn and I motored over to the scale circle and looked at the airplanes and watched some flights. We saw the following fly; Brewster Buffalo, Navy R6D(DC-6) B-25. Buster, and a Consolidated PB2A. We also saw PT-23, B-18, P-38, Corsair, F6F, Ryan ST, and a Dehaviland named Grosvner House. We didn't see the 1/2a's fly; that would have been fun.

The sun came out and Elwyn wanted to photograph stunt ships, so off we went.

The Junkyard Wars: Event Director- Ken Armish Judges: George Waters, Allen Buck

Brew Barons: Airplane looked fast but wasn't. Flew BIG loops. Crashed

Dixie wiz kids (Memphis Mafia)  received 100 bonus points for a quick build. A flying carpet kind of airplane covered in duct tape. Sadly, Red Green wasn't here, and it did not fly.

Team Canada: the airplane had a small Canadian Mounty glued to the fuselage. (it wasn't a full mounty!) It flew, did loops and crashed, dismounting the mounty.

The wrecking Crew: 100 point bonus for quick build. The pilot Joe Gilbert took off into a half loop, flew 10 laps, then the airplane then a lot of stunts, inside and outside loops, Horizontal and overhead eights wowed the crowd and then crashed.

Team Absurd: a common looking airplane, kinda ugly, built by Dan Banjock, some Philly Fliers, and a whole bunch of Kids. Dan took off with a bunch of kids in the circle, then he started letting different girls and boys fly. they flew the airplane perfectly, and the last little boy who flew landed the airplane perfectly. Joe Gilbert looked over at me and said sadly;" You can't beat kids!"

The great Brodak buffet feed on friday evening:

A whole bunch of pretty ladies, (Wives and Girlfriends of the modelers) served the hungry crowd from two serving lines. The ladies all had big buttons on that said
" BBB" Buzz told me that the buttons stood for Buzz's Beautyous
Babes. (or something like that)

The main course was Fried chicken and Barbecue, with potato salad, beans, macarony salad, fruit cup, rolls, watermelon, and a huge variety of drinks.

Thank you, John and Buzz!!!
