Bro Tomahawk
« on: July 05, 2006, 04:05:54 PM »
I have a Brodak Tomahawk that I just swapped a Magnum 25 instead of the Veco 19. Will .012 X 52' lines be good enough or since I'm right on the line size limit would the .015's be better? It's just for learning and fun fly.  Thanks

I have mine on 58' .015s eye to eye with an OS 20 FP.

It is getting heavier since my son dictated its repair.  Thin wing, needs to fly at 4.8-4.9 on the 58' lines.

Lee: What prop are you using? Any idea of launch RPM'S. I'm going to fly it tomarrow, the Mag sure does start easy. It's got a Randy Smith venturi and PA NVA.

Hi Lee, Using a APC 9/4 prop.  Dunno the revs. I just run a fast 2 cycle, just  enough so it don't lean out in flight.  Mine usually is a one flip.  I choke venturi, flip thru about 7 times, hook up the glow, and it starts.
Gonna use another Magnum 25 on my Sweet Sweep.

I flew the Tomahawk today and the Magnum worked great. It was a little testy starting but a slight exhaust prime and she fired right up. I had to add 1 1/2 oz to the tail for balance. It has a nice break to it and plenty of power. I only ran 3 2oz tanks in it and put it on the plane. I flew it 4 times and it kept getting stronger. I started with a 9-4 but went to a 9-6 seems happy with it, and I'm very happy with it also. Once it's fully broken in I'll have to try it on a Ringmaster or a Flite Streak size plane. I used Sig Champion 10-22 (50/50) fuel with a OS A3 plug I'm out of Thunderbolt 115493's. Will order some more from Hobby People as they have a 10.00 discount on a 25.00 order. Will post the code.

4th of July, I flew a new Skyray 35 with a .25LAS, stock muffler, 9-4 (for now, 10-4 after more running). Currently finishing up a Tomahawk II for a Magnum XL .25. It's a much bigger model than the Veco Tomahawk, and the wing is pretty thick. Rich McConnell was flying a Veco Tomahawk with a Fox .15 Schneurle...pretty fast.

The Skyray is on .012's x 60' eye/eye, and I think that's the way to go unless you (or your field) are really hard on the lines. "Line Whip" is ugly, and a small, light model doesn't need it. The .012" lines are plenty strong enough for your Tomahawk. At least, if you don't crimp the ends. Use copper wire and you'll be well served. I cover the bindings with heat shrink tubing, same for leadouts.

My Magnum has some experience on a Pat Johnston "Stunt Trainer" that I flew a lot 4-5 years ago. At that time, AMA rules required .015's, and I regretted that fact. I used an RSM tongue muffler (Fox .35 or OS .40FP/LA stuff all fits). Currently have a RO-Jett tube muffler (35 grams) on it, but will adjust the CG with mufflers. I liked a 9-4 Taipan prop on the "Stunt Trainer" (they're cheap and work well). About $8/10, I think. See Phil Brown's link site for where to get'um or Google "Hobby Club". My venturi is .250" or .257", with a .156" spraybar (K&B, currently).  :D Steve
