British designed CL models! Find out about them?

In all honesty, I have this thing for British stuff. Maybe I'm drawn to their Flag as art, possibly, because I've used it plenty. I also ran a Morgan Plus4 for 30 years! British enough?

Anyway, I hate to dig out all my Aeromodeller's of yesteryear's, because the first one I looked at had a photo of the All American. April 1990, page 201.

Plus, what I'm looking for won't be there.

Yes !
One of the best control line sites on the web is the Barton Forum. Just Google it and you should find it no problem. Be warned that this is not just a Stunt Forum. It covers every control line discipline, plus old time stuff and lot lots more!
Note I said "one of the best" so I am not being rude to Stunthanger! You might even recognise some "in cognito" US flyers lurking around too!

The Brit Taurus is one of my favorite planes. Designed by John Coasby in the 40's, it is a fun plane to build and fly. I have had several engines in it, and it has had an Anderson Spitfire in it for quite some time.

Oh Yeah! I love flying sparkers, and fly them about as much as I do my glo stuff. Just to much fun. This is my Humongous with a Spitfire, and my stripped down Super Zilch with a Super Cyclone. The Zilch now has an Atwood 63 Super Champion on it.

I build almost all of my models from plans. All are covered with either silk or silkspan, and finished with brushed on dope. Kinda like doing it the old way. LOL. I have acquired most of my old engines off of e-bay over the last 15 years, and bought a few from friends. I also fly a few old time free flights with radios and spark motors, mostly just for fun when I'm not flying control line. After flying R/C Pattern competition for 25 years, I really enjoy the old stuff. One more picture of my other Humongous with a Spitfire.

p.s. My own Taurus wasn't a barn-burner.  I found it to be squirrely in the wind.

Floyd; Mine doesn't do to well in the wind either even though it is a little on the heavy side. But in a light breeze it fly's so slow that you just guide it around where you want it to go. I do fly it a lot in 15 to 18 mph winds, but I don't do vertical 8's and overhead 8's. I do crank up the power on the Anderson when it is windy. I run the timer up one more notch, and lean the needle into a wet 2. Rusty Brown had a light one with a Fox 59 that he use to fly in PA. It did a pretty good job with Rusty at the handle. In gusty wind I have seen the top of the wing a few times, but it always straightens itself out. I have flown it quite a bit over the last 10 or 12 years, and it has not been repaired yet.

Mine is the Peacemaker which is still waiting for me to get some ether.   The other is the Thunderbolt which I am finally getting some flying done with it.  Both from the short kits on the UK Ebay site.   Heve a bunch more still in the packages to build.   H^^

No photos of the Eifflaender Freebird yet?

Here's one I found on a German site.
Plans are available at least from PAW ( http://www.eifflaender.com/modeller.htm ) and myhobbystore ( http://www.myhobbystore.co.uk/product/15465/am1520-freebird-plans ).

Obviously, it should be run with a .35 PAW diesel...

Here's a couple of shots of mine. About 42" span, 23 oz, and powered by a PAW 19TBR.  Apart from having a certain vintage charm, it's a lovely model to fly and very capable.

Thanks Charles, the graphic actually started out as a .bmp  - I usually just mess around a bit on the computer and make myself a couple of waterslide decals.  Not a patch on your vinyl stuff I'm sure, but good enough at my level of modelling.  Will attach a jpg, which you're welcome to use as you see fit.  (The .bmp is probably better, but it's over 1Mb).

G'day Louie, 

You could certainly go down that path if you wanted, although you'd have to bear in mind that the spars are pretty slender and some beefing-up of the centre section might be warranted.  What would still look pretty sharp, and would be an awful lot simpler to do, would be to keep the fuselage-mounted gear but put spats and strut covers on it.  Very easily done, and well worth the trouble (which has me wondering why I didn't do it myself?!).

That is one good looking model(the plane).  The British and Australians do have a way with designs that is different in a way I can't explain. H^^

I understood you make it out of square ribs and sand to airfoil, unless you are handy with CAD and laser cutting.

Here's what I'm working on - the Icarus Jr by John Coasby.
As many of you know, I like to fly something different.
For the photos, the plane is held together with tape and pins.
Weight as shown is 18 ounces.
Power is the ETA 29 as shown on the original plans.
Has anyone ever flown or even seen one of these?
OTS legal of course.

Great design and it looks like you have your building under control.

What year was the model first designed?

Is this an over the Pond model, or was it popular in the US also.

Hi, CB.
Never saw or heard of the Icarus Jr till recenly. A fellow from England was working for me and he sent me the plans.
The plans show the ETA 29 and I found a brand-new one in my "stuff" so that's what will fly the model.
The plans state 1952 but I'm not sure when it was designed.

Small pic from internet of nice "Freebird". I have more recent plans, which show bubble canopy, slightly different outer rib structure and not such a pleasing fuselage shape. It seems like a good concept though.

Edit: My plans also show side mounted engine.
