Boy did I pull a good one!!!
« on: September 19, 2006, 08:19:02 PM »
I finished some repairs on my profile Smoothie, and installed a Fox 35 with a 10/6 Master Airscrew prop.  Took it out to a table that I use to run engines on the plane,  secured the tail with nylon cord, fueled it, choked it, attached the lighter, and got a 4-flip start ...............THE PLANE SHOT BACKWARDS!!!  In the process, the prop went by my left hand which I was using to keep it in place while starting and made two gashes in my left thumb at the hand knuckle, almost to the bone.  Three hours in the ER and 9 stitches later , I realized that I had installed a PUSHER prop on the engine.  I don't know where I bought it, but I'll sure be more careful  the next time I buy props, and check them before putting them on the airplane.  Just "shows to go 'ya" what can happen.    Glen

I sympathize with you, that is a real bummer. We could start a small club (or probably a big club) as I still carry scars that I got 40 years ago. It is on my left thumb where a prop made about three slices through the thumbnail. I wont go in to the gory details but it hurt plenty.

It reminds me of the time we were starting an engine for a flight and we thought it was running backwards every time it started. It took a while to realize it was running to strongly to be going backwards. Somebody finally figured out the guy had put a pusher prop on it.

I went through my stash of props, today, and THAT one was the only pusher out of about 25.  Thinking seriously of just using wood props.  Those "Ninja Death Blades" have got me scared.  We'll see...........Glen

Good thing it wasn't a new unsanded APC.  They slice, dice, and make juianne frys.

Luckily, it wasn't an APC; it was a Master Airscrew, on which, I had painted the tips yellow.  The doctor pulled about six pieces of yellow dope out of the cuts.  I hate to think what would have happened with an APC.  Unless I change my mind, it's wood for me!       Glen

Hate to tell you this but wood can be almost as bad. The only advantage to wood is it has a better chance of breaking before it will actually take a finger off but when it comes to slicing and dicing wood can do allot of damage before it breaks. First hand expierence...

Ditto on the wood props.  Ask John Bender and Emmy about my right index finger.  Did that while reaching for the Ni Start battery. Prop was a Power Point 10-4.  Also most of my injuries have been when I thought someone was holding the plane.  Now I use a death grip on plane while starting.  DOC Holliday

This is why i stayed with wood props when pitting fast rat when every one else went to glass and carbon props.same in combat.

those  .40 race engines with high nitro and 8x8.5/9 woods hurt when they pop you---the others cut--badly--through leather gloves as well .

to this day its wood only for me unless its a mild engine(stunt or std r/c)
