Boeing Engineer (stunt grunter) wins design award.
« on: November 03, 2008, 08:23:30 PM »
Found this on KOMO this morn that an old stunt model flyer now living in NYC just won a paper airplanedesign award. If I am correct this is the same design engineer that won the paper airplane contest here in Seattle at the Museum of Flight...located just across the street from his workplace.
(For some reason....they didn't share his name due to security reason? LL~ H^^ n~

Howard....Hummm?
My old demented brain cells.... can't remember his name....but saw him out on the field at Aerospace Center with Gary Letsinger and Bob Emmett a long time ago? It must have been in the early 80's or late 70s?
He was a newbee control liner who was flying an old white Nobler with red trim that he bought from Jim Parsons?
He was some kind of an aero type from the Blackbox military side at the DC? Was a friend of Chris Cox who is an awesome display model maker who I think is now with Phantom Works. I saw his photo on the Boeing news line around 2003-04??? that he was one of the winners at the Museum of Flight's paper airplane contest?
I will check with Gary? FOR SURE.... his mind-N' memory is far and away less demented than mine

When I was going to college at Idaho State University, there was a paper plane contest. They gave everyone a sheet of paper at the site (the Minidome in Pocatello). There was a rather large can placed on the 50 yard line of the football field. The stand filled and the idea was to write your name on the paper, fold up your plane and launch it at the can. The person that got the closest won the prize (dinner at the local steak joint). It was part of some athletic event, half time show or some such.

I was at the top of the stands, some 100+ feet off the field level. I am proud to say that I was the only one (out of about 500 competing) that got the plane in the barrel. My design was stolen (er, copied) from a book on paper airplanes. Worked pretty well.  ;D
