Tom, power I do know is a PA 75 on a pipe I believe, but that's all I know.

Whats the size of this one as compared to the new Brodak kit ?? OBTW SS Hobbies has the United kit on an overstock sale for 89.00 in his bargan hangar. The canopy color is great.

I think Bob has this based off the Patternmaster.  Bob did sign some kits at Brodak and I was tempted to buy one of the ones that were autographed.

Hey Gang,

I would like to thank Matt for posting these pictures for me 'cause every time I try the files are always to big.
Apparently some of you are asking for specks on the new bird.
The aerodynamics are all Pattern Master specs in a United Suit. Yes, this resembles the Brodak kit but is the 60 size PM.
The wing area is 770 squares and the moments are 10 1/2 by 18 1/4 and the weight, unfortunately,
The finish is a Hodge podge of a few products. The under coating is Randolph's Nitrate dope which was used as the initial coats on the raw balsa. I then used 00 silk span on the wing, which is built up millennium style and planked with 1/16 inch balsa wood. All other parts are covered in carbon avail, again using nitrate dope to put down. Automotive primer, out of a spray can was used for the filler and the paints were PPG auto for the metallic green (Special Mix Custom color). The red and blue are Certified clear, the white and black are Sig and the Chrome Yellow and purple are also PPG automotive mixed colors.
The top coats of clear are all certified and I used different thinner or what I had around at the time which Randolph's and Certified Butyrate Thinner.
Th power is a PA 75 on a Randy New PA 75 Pipe.
The prop is a Bolly 13 1/2 X 4.5 and the tank is a Randy 7 1/d oz tank made by Brodak. The spinner is also a Randy spinner and the wheel pants and gear are carbon fibre.

The initial flight's have not been taken yet, and I'm planning on trying her out tomorrow for the initial flight's and I'll be using .018 cables made up by Tom Morris. Although the weight calls for .021's, I don't have to use them till I use the ship in competition. and I'll let you know how that work's out when I get around to it. I'm not even sure where to get .021 lines.

I am happy with the way the ship came out, but not so happy about the weight. I was shooting for about 73 ounces. I weighed this on a Postal Scale and possibly it's lighter then it showed on my scale. Who knows ?

I want to thank you all for your positive compliment's. Since my last PatternMaster had Automotive Clear on it and this one is Butyrate dope the wet sanding was a "Bitch". The last ship I had to wet sand was the number 5 United which was also Certified Clear. I hate to wet sand. Oh Well !!

Will let you now how it flies after the weekend.

Thanks and cheers,

So Bob, how much does it weigh?  When you said the silver PM weighs around 72 ounces, you said that was light for you.  If you have to use .021 lines, my optomistic weight guess would be 76 ounces?  Hopefully not 85 ounces like the orange United.

Hey Gang,

I have to apologize for leaving out the weight, but like I thought I said the 73 oz. I was shooting for was missed "Big Time". The new bird weighs in at 81 oz. which makes me a candidate for .021 lines. I will fly now on .018 and that's what I did today. The ship fly's well and was a little sluggish on response until I opened the handle spacing from 5'2 inches to 6 inches. I had trouble with the "Jack System" for the plug on the third flight. The motor (PA75) is definitely not broken in as of yet and I need to correct the pipe length which I had too long at 18 3/4. I checked with Jose who told me it should be 18.5 to start.
I think the jack system is causing the glow lighter to not give out enough current for the plug which is probably why it was a little hard to start. I guess I'll have to put a plug hole in the cowl for the igniter which will make starts a lot easier.

I'll keep you posted, but based on the weight I know in the wind this is going to be hard to hold onto.

Cheers,

Champione

Agreed. There is just about nothing we fly that can break high quality .018's. You would lose your arm first. If something I built required more than .018's, I would fly it for sport on .018's and build something else.
