Bob suffered a major setback over Easter. His back seized and the pain immobilized him. He has had a CAT scan revealing deterioration in his entire lumbar spine. The vertebrae are misaligned and breaking down. He is resting on the floor of his living room. It looks like there will be an extensive course of surgery to fuse and align the vertebrae, and his mobility will be extremely limited for the foreseeable future. He is able to receive phone calls, but prayer is probably the best we can all do for him. Tom Hampshire

As some one who has had 3 spinal fusions, I know what he is going through.
I will give him a call.
Mike
-
Ouch! No!
I've never met Bob but I've talked to him on the phone, and, through his writing, he's probably the single person in the world most responsible for getting me fired up about competing in control line stunt. This doesn't sound like something that one ever gets over entirely, but I certainly hope that he will do as best as can be.
-
I am not speaking For Bob at all but I just got off the phone with him and he was in excruciating pain that only this condition can bring. It debilitates you in a way you just cannot imagine unless you suffer from it. It ended my flying days years ago. He will need all of our prayers and support. Narcotics usually do not touch this kind of nerve pain.
Mike

Get well Bob. One of my teenage heros.
-
Bob,
My prayers are for you to have less pain and a full recovery.
George

Thanks Tom for letting us know. Praying for healing and recovery for a very good man.

I too am praying for a healing to a strong supporter to our hobby and a friend to all in the stunt community.

Oh dear. If anyone is passing messages to Bob please include us in the good wishes. We know a little about spinal fusions and appreciate what he is going through.

Oh, my...that's terrible bad news to hear. My best wishes to Bob for a speedy recovery. D>K Steve
-
I hate to hear this. Praying for healing for you Bob.

Bob
You're in our prayers. My boys will be sad to here this. You are a hero to them.

Bob,
I hope the pain subsides very soon. Wishing you well and keeping you in our prayers.

Dang I hate to hear that about Bob Hunt, sucks the fun out of life right now I bet.
Bob, if you are reading, i know they say misery loves company....there are a few of us with similar issues, Gene Martine just had a lumbar disk insert and lock device put in, maybe you should give him a call for some encouragement. His surgery went very well and he is even doing overhead eights already.
Personally, I've got a C3/C4 disk injury in my neck that if i think about it, leaves me with constant pain down my left arm, and when i screw up and over do something can take me out of action for a day or two... But, if i behave, it is manageable. Some day i may opt for the Peyton Manning surgery if they perfect it for us without multi million dollar salaries, or it gets to where i cant stand it or it shifts to my Right arm.
Hoping you have some good options to choose from and can get back what you have lost soon,
EricV

Hoping you find some relief and are back on your feet as soon as possible Bob, hang in there.

Say it ain't so Bob! I'm hoping the best care for you and a full recovery. Can't see you sitting still very long.

-
Hey Bob, praying the medics have a good solution for you with a speedy return to building and flying.
-
Get well soon Bob. Hopefully the Docs can CA your spine back together!
-
What a shock. I talk to Bob several times a month the last time was last week. We have known each other for many years.
Get well buddy!
-
Sorry to hear this, get well soon Bob.
Steve
-
Gee what a bummer for Bob!!
Tom, Do encourage Bob to get the best surgeon he can find because you only get one lower back!! The pain alone can be crippling. Few people reach their senior years without some kind of back problem and Bob's sounds like one of the worst.
I am sure that the model aviation community will be praying for him and I know I will be!
-
Bob my friend,
I am very saddened to hear about your pain and suffering. I will pray for you every day in hopes that your situation will improve very soon.
I and just about everyone I know that is involved in our sport of Stunt Flying is deeply affected by this news.
I know a lot of ex-motorcycle racers that have similar injuries from falling on their Butt and Head too often when they were young and it didn't hurt so much. I do know you are and always have been heavily involved in motorcycles...I've been lucky only have blinkety-blank shoulder and arm pain from mine.
I truly believe with your determination and self confidence you will whip this!
Your Friend,
Randy Cuberly

Bob, We are all with you getting back as good as new. We are channeling good vibes.--Louie

Praying for ya Bob!

OUCH!!! My best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Bob. He is certainly "one of the good guys"
-
Hope you are pain free asap, Bob.
Sending you positive thoughts for a speedy recovery.
Best Regards,
Chris Behm

My prayers will include Bob. I don't know him, but he has been and still is very important to C/L.

Like you Eric I have the same neck problem only the right arm, flying one naturally, plus constant sciatica. Hopefully bob will get to the point that we all aspire to. Hopefully Bob will get great medical care and have it in manageable condition soon. We will all certainly be hoping for the best for him.

Bad News . seems a miracle or two would be the order . Particularly with the price of medicos over there .Pain is bloody annoying and a pain .
Mind over matter , Christian Scientist healing etc etc .
-
I pray that the Great Physician and healer, our Lord Jesus Christ, will have mercy on you and touch you with his healing powers.
-
Hey ol buddie. I know your pain and all were pulling for you. It's not so much getting treatment as knowing your limitations.. Bill
-
Oww. Hang in there Bob, you'll be in my thoughts and prayers for a while.
. Bob

My thoughts and prayers go out to you.
get well soon

Get well soon Bob!

Hang in there Bob. My wife had a spinal fusion on her L4-L5 about a year ago and is doing wonderfully. She is pain free in that area.
Heal on)))))

Bob is one of our champions and considering how much he has done for the stunt community, this is really distressing news. Please, anyone speaking to him, let him know how much we all are pulling for him.
Bob: get well soon!

As one that has suffered from back pain for years my heart goes out to you. I will be praying for you, that with the pain He will give you grace to keep the faith, and heal you from all your back problems. He is still the great healer. May the Lord have mercy on you Bob.
-
Thanks for the news Tom. This is tough to hear. Bob is a great guy and a font of knowledge. I hope he does well and can eventually get back to what he loves. Good luck, Bob. I'll be thinking of you.
-
Bob,
You're too young and vital for this...
Get better.

So I guess ordering a set of foam core wings would be out of the question?

Bubba is good guy! Fortunately, while it hurts like living hell and is debilitating, unless something is really failed, it goes away after a while.
I have had the same sort of back "lock-ups" from time to time, fortunately mine are not the result of any sort of permanent degradation. But it's absolutely the worst - basically you are doing nothing unusual, and one second you are reaching for a towel, the next you are seized up in pain on the floor. I could at least understand if you are actually doing something strenuous (that you could hypothetically avoid) but when it's more-or-less nothing stressful, that's hard to deal with.
I have been really lucky for a while now, no crippling instances in maybe 10 years, but it's always lurking and there's no way to dodge it or know when it's coming again.

In just a few short years, Bob has taken me under his wing (no pun here) and has treated me like a long time best friend. Many days at his house with many hours of building have given me an incredible appreciation for his craftsmanship, innovation, and dedication to our sport. As active as he is, I can imagine that his inability to do what he does so well must be very, very tough.
As all of you, I wish Bob comfort and recovery as soon as humanly possible.

Some positive news, I received an email from my Mom today:
"I wanted to let you know that Dad just called me and he was able to get up and walk around and sit in a chair. He has been doing some stretching exercises on the floor that the doctor told him to do. He said he didn’t have any pain in the thigh, but was a little woozy from being on his back."
I'm sure he will let everyone know what's up as soon as he can.
-
That's good news, Robby. Hope he feels better. We are all worried about him.

Robby,
Thanks for the update. He has many prayers going his way. With God's grace and some doctor's help he will be back at it soon.
I am sure that the whole world will be trying to call him, so I will giving him some time. Please tell him hello the next time you call your mom. She's a great person too, and I am glad that I know them both.
-
Good to hear!
Hope that trend continues. Bob seems like someone that doesn't throw in the towel easily, I see a positive outcome happening soon.
Fingers are crossed here!
Kind Regards,
Chris

Robby thanks for the news. You know your Dad is one of my heroes. All has been said except he better take care of him self.
-
Just got off the phone with Bob. The chiropracter relieved his leg pains, and he is able to move around some now. Sometimes the critical factor in a recovery is the persons attitude. From what I could tell, he was quite positive about what was coming next.
Knowing Bob, that should NOT have surprised me. He was already getting ready to work on the upcoming issue of SN. He obviously is feeling better.
Hope all your upcoming treatments do what they are supposed to do Bob.
Remember, we are all thinking about you.
-
Hang in there Bob, you don't want to miss a VSC! All my best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.
-
Thanks Paul,
Great News Bob is feeling better!
Bob we love you and are praying for you, Brother.

I saw Bob's name in Mark Weiss' mailing list for the Bob Shaw CLPA contest at the Joe Nall in May. I was excited about meeting him some of the other "Big Guys" that I've admired on the forums and from afar. I'm disappointed Bob won't make it, but I bet he'll beat this thing and get back into action.
Get well Bob, one of these days I want to see some of your planes and watch you fly. I'm pulling for you.

It ain't over. Get better.

Praying for you Bob.
Get well and pain free soon good buddy.

For the rest of us, a reminder to be careful lifting and twisting, even the younger guys. n1

Bob, after reading your post I think it is time to take care of your self first. You have been blessed to have the talent you have and the ideas that have improved the stunt category. So the old DOC Holliday says to take it easy and get well.
-
You know you have my prayers. I won't call you for a while to give you some time - I know how that goes.
Be blessed!

Bob,
Who could ever have known that a Hayabusa could be considered an orthopedic stretching device. I gotta have one! I wonder if Medicare will cover it!! LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ #^ #^
My current Honda Motocrosser doesn't do a thing for my back except keep me in bed for the next day groning! y1 <=
Good to hear that things are at least a bit better for you at the moment. Hang in there my friend!
Randy Cuberly
-
Man up and get back to work! LL~ Just kidding, do what you need to get your life back together. I don't like pain, it hurts! We all are rooting for your complete recovery. H^^
-
Bob, I just now found this thread and am very concerned for you. I cannot think of anyone else who has done more to spread and educate people in the CL hobby, nor convey so much optimism and fun in his own endeavors. Thanks so much for all the help you have given me and the rest of us. Whatever it takes, please do what the docs say needs to be done to get yourself back as fit and pain-free as possible. Such a sudden change must have been a real shock, and I'm glad to see you so resilient. Just DON"T overdo it. OK? We're with you!

I hope a speedy recovery and that you come back in full to the middle of your friends.

That is very good news, Bob. Glad there is a solution and that hopefully, in the end, things will work out for you. I hope to see you in the circle again. You are an incredible asset to the event and a good friend to all.

Hi Bob
Our VERY BEST WISHES for a speedy recovery from Germany.
I am sure I can speak also for my CL buddys like the Kornmeier Family, Claus Maikis, Christoph Holtermann,
the Kehnen Family just to name a few you may know.
After my backbone surgery with 4 Titan screws plus two connectors , I am back onto circle.
My both legs where numbness all the way down.
CT scan : 2 dislocated discs blocking the spinal channel .
Luckily ,...I found "ONE OF VERY GOOD DOCTOR" which released me from my BIGGEST PAINS I ever had in my life.
After all....I am a painless HAPPY CAMPER.
All the best H^^ Peter
-
Bob,
Thanks for the update.
I hope your recovery goes smoothly.
