Bob broke his leg just below the hip 2 weeks ago and he did not want everyone knowing about it at the time.

Since then he has had some other major complications and is highly sedated. Please pray for him.

Bob is and always has been one of my heros.  He's also a tough competitor and a tough guy.  I have great hopes that he will shake off this latest trial and be back in action soon!

My Great Grandmother broke her hip at age 80 and they said it would probably shorten her life...Maybe that's why she only lived to be 108!

I expect Bob to be at least as good as an old lady!  Tell him I said so when you're able to talk to him.   LL~ LL~ LL~

Good News!

Mike Scott visited with Bob yesterday. His white blood count is down so they seem to beating the infections. He is weak but was able to talk and displayed his sense of humour. When he was told that Jack Sheeks was asking about him, his reply was "How's Shirley".  (Jack's wife)

Hello,

Steve and I visited Bob on Saturday.  First thing out of his mouth were questions about future setups. It is written on the dry erase board in his room that he is the 5X champ and 1X WC.  His daughter Christy brought in some pics to show the Drs and nurses who he is and what he has accomplished.  But I think what they are really learning about him is that is he is the real deal, a genuine person.

When we saw him he was pretty alert but got tired quickly.  He is not much on hearing these days but that's understandable.  He always tuned the engines best best by ear.

Today's update is the same as yesterday's, white blood cell count holding steady.  He will have to beat the infection and then get some rehab for the broken hip.  He has a VERY long road ahead as he is very weak.

His family is all around him and helping as best they can each and every day.

Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

I wanted to post a quick update and let everyone know conditions are still critical. It is infections that Bob is fighting the most. His leg/hip is not a big concern. The hospital had him sitting on the side of the bed today. He is/was still mostly out of it. Don said the main concern for the family is keeping him comfortable. I will let everyone know more as things come about. Mike

This is a huge blow. When I first saw Bob flying at Hobby Park
in Dallas, I couldn't believe it was really him. That he would later
become a friend and mentor to my brother and I is more than
I could have ever imagined. I would only really get nervous
when flying with Bob watching because I so badly wanted to
do well under his watchful eye. I am so glad that Doug and
I visited him in the hospital recently.

I rarely post here or anywhere but today is different.  All to often we wait until someone we admire is gone to say the good things about them.  To me that just doesn’t make sense so many years ago I started letting those people know how and why I admire them.  To that end I would like to share a letter I wrote to Bob almost two years ago and my April 1974 Round & Round column in Model Airplane News which I sent to Bob with that letter.  The record shows that Bob did indeed win the World Championship.  That column would have been written and submitted for publication almost exactly 41 years ago to this date.

RIP my friend…and thanks again!

Very sad news. He was my hero as I was growing up. Saw him at the Nat's many times in the 70's and early 80's. I was a "nobody" at the time. At the 83 Nat's near the end of the finals, which were my first, he came over and sat by me and told me how impressed he was with my flying. He said I would win soon. I was in total shock. My idol was sitting next to me talking to me. I can't tell you how good that made me feel!

I'll never forget that time. He was a true gentleman, every time I talked to him.

We will all miss BOB!

Bob was the best. Even in a sport of gentlemen competitors, he stood out.

He was very helpful to me and provided a lot of encouragement to me when I started trying to be competitive.
I know he did the same for Doug and Steve, and countless others.

It's a sad day for me, and for the hobby.

Very sorry to hear this news. I never had the pleasure of meeting Bob, but ever since I first discovered C/L modeling he has always been an inspiration to me. His "Bear" design, in my mind, is one of the most iconic C/L designs of all time. I probably first noticed Bob's name in the mid or late 70's when I use to literally wear out the school library copies of Model Airplane News by reading and re-reading them over and over again. Bob Gieseke has always been one of "The Names" that I've considered one of the "Gods" of our hobby/sport. This is definitely a sad day for the entire C/L community, my condolences to all friends and family.

One of the really great parts about stunt is that we not only get to see our heroes in person, but we actually have the opportunity to get to know them.  Growing up, as far back as I can remember, names like Les McDonald, Bill Werwage, and Bob Gieseke (among others) were regular figures in stories I would hear from my Dad.  Before I ever met them they were already larger than life.  At that time I never imagined I would fly stunt, yet they were already inseparable from my life.

I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Bear's passing today.  In the years since I was child, I had gotten to know Bear and consider him to be like a second father and close friend.  In fact, my dad would always say that when he talked with Bear, he would always ask about me by saying "how's my boy?"
Knowing Bear, as many do, being a competitor was at his core.  I think there was always a part of him that would question each year if he should keeping competing once he was past his prime.  I only hope he knew half of what it meant to have him there year after year.  His presence at the field was invaluable, and I dread the next time I go to a contest that he would normally be at, knowing he won't be.

Like most people here, I have so many memories of Bear.  The happiness in his smile the time Bill Rich brought frostys to the field for Bear, Curt, Randy, my dad and I.  The really windy NATS a decade or so ago when he had a chance to make the Top 5 after the first round of Top 20.  Bear would always say he wanted to make the Top 5 one last time, and all of the sudden it seemed possible.  I remember looking at the first round score with him under the pavilion and the realization and excitement that came with it.  He gave me a little smile and raised his eyebrows up and down with look of hmmmm.  I later remember  the second round flight when he ended up tripping and losing the opportunity....never have I felt so devastated at a contest.  I always remember how happy he was when his brother Don was at a contest as his coach.  I remember watching a team trials finals with him just sitting on the little hill by the race car track at Muncie.  I also remember a time I flew into Muncie for a team trials and was coaching my dad.  I was only there a short time, and we were rushing around to practice and trim.  I finally saw Bear as we were in the middle of all of that, and there wasn't much time to talk.  I think Bear knew I felt bad that I couldn't chat longer, but he just said "Go, you have work to do!"  The last letter I received from Bear was a few years back.  Though he was frustrated about his inability to look up to fly overheads, he couldn't be more proud of Doug's NATS win, and I don't think even winning himself would have made him happier.

I think Curt's comment about a huge emptiness in his heart is spot on...I know exactly how he feels, and have been choked up more than once today.  Damn I'll miss him.

I'd like to personally thank Mike Scott for letting me send a get well card to Bear care of him, and especially for making sure if got to him before today.  I really, really appreciate it Mike!

I'll miss ya Bear...

My name is Nathan and I am Bob's grandson (son of Christy Hallford).  I really am enjoying hearing how my grandfather reached out/touched/helped people.  I am going to start another thread for pictures and any funny/touching stories each of you have about him.  I would love to show my mom and uncles some of the stories and hopefully pictures you have of Bob over the years as well as letting me get to know more about him in the flying days.

I knew he flew and I knew he was "kind of a big deal" when I head about a younger kid getting his autograph at Nats and saying "Wow, I just met Bob Gieseke!!!!"  To me he was just Grandpa and a loving Grandpa who had a hobby.  I never heard him boast/talk about how good/etc he was, I had to hear stories about Nat's and '76 from others to even know how good he was.  I only saw him fly a few times but he truly loved the hobby and enjoyed giving back.  I spent some time watching him build the Nobler's in his shop when I was young and think it's crazy that other people would call him for tips on how to make their own just to have one like his.

Today has been a hard day for the family obviously but he's not it any pain anymore.  I appreciate all your kind comments about Bob and just hope you will share in the thread I am about to make.  It would mean a ton to me personally and of course to Christy, Max, and Joe Gieseke as well as all the rest of the family and friends.

Thank you,
Nathan

Bob was my idol, my coach, my friend and my brother. Bob was Jan's (my wife) favorite people. One year Jan cooked  a great meal for some of the guys at the Nats and she was impressed with Bob. She said "what a gentlemen". This praise has and will be mentioned many, many time in the life of this thread. Bob was a gentle man as well as a gretlemen. I will miss you Bob, especially at Nats time.
Your family are in our prayers.

Very sad news.  I was actually looking forward to hearing that Bob was recovering enough to go home so that I could call him and chat.  Another tough lesson to always keep in touch with good friends, as we never know when we may no longer have one last chance.

Like so many others, Bob was a childhood hero that I would read about and could only imagine what it would be like to be at the top of one's game.  I met Bob at the Tri-Cities Nat's where I actually got to speak to him and no doubt said many embarrassing things.  After all, it is not everyday one gets to speak with a legend.  In the latter part of the 90's, frequent business trips took me to Dallas.  I called Bob on the off chance he might remember me from the Nat's, and whether he did or did not, he invited me over to the house to visit.  This was the beginning of many visits to Bob's.  He was always the first or second call I would make when in town (Don Hutchison the other), and the call would pretty much always go like this, "Hey Bob, it's Chris", Bob - "Are you in town?"  Me - "yup". Bob - "Let's go for Dinner!".  Dinner for Bob was the nearby Denny's, where he would invariably order the Liver and Onions.  Who eats Liver and Onions any more?  Bob loved them.  I was OK with them, and can probably honestly say the last time I had Liver and Onions, was with Bob.

Anyhow, the business trips came to an end, and so did the frequent visits with Bob.  I'd call him from time to time to say hi.  Call aways began with "Are you in town?".

I'll miss you my friend.  I'm sure you are enjoying a plate of Liver and Onions in Heaven (assuming they have such a thing in Heaven).

One last thing - how many people visited the junk room in Bob's house?  The airplane rubble and history piled up in that tiny room was worth the price of admission.  He would point out carnage, and say something like, "that was the airplane that won the ___ ____ (fill in the blanks).  I suspect it is still there, never cleaned out to this day.

Unfortunately, I only got to meet Bob twice.  I met him for the first time at the 2011 NATS where he judged me during the qualifying rounds.  I remember thinking to myself, I really need to burn in a good flight to impress Bob.  I also remember him standing with Les McDonald telling stories of previous NATS and Worlds out on the L-Pad one evening during practice.  I got to meet him again later that year at the Team Trials where he judged once again. The biggest comment I remember from him is him saying I had one of the best 45's out of anyone at the Team Trials.  I remember many of those flights from that weekend and I try my best to get my tops at that height every time.

It's too bad I got into the hobby about 10 years too late to really get a chance to know him...
