Oklahoma Control Line Championships-september 29-29 2013
« on: October 01, 2013, 02:42:13 PM »
Saturday morning started with temps in the middle 70's and the wind blowing 10-20 miles an hour. The weatherman said that the rain would start at 10 am, and end at 12 noon. They lied. Around 10 am, the temperature dropped, and it started raining heavily and continued on until 3 pm.

Two good things that came out of the rain is that Pat Reeves got everyone signed up to fly, and Colleen Gilbert had a hot meal ready for everyone for the noon meal.

Doug Patterson came up from Louisiana just to judge. He has a brother here in tulsa, so he got some good visiting time in.  Marvin, Ree, and David Denny showed up. Marvin had wanted to judge old time stunt plus, but the weather prevented it, the Denny's went home that afternoon. Lew Woolard and Robert Brookins came down Lew wanted to judge Saturday, but again, the weather prevented it.

We did a lot of visiting in the clubhouse and under the shelter. We were grateful that the Tulsa Gluedobbers controline club have a 12'x30' clubhouse and a steel shelter which is actually a two car carport. There was enough shelter for everyone to stay out of the rain.

We had people from 5 states waiting to fly, but no official flights took place until sunday. We called official Saturday flying off around 3 pm and went home.

This is the first time in 25 years that we have been rained out on either contest day. The challenge now was to complete the entire contest on sunday.

Sunday morning was cold and very foggy. I left the house at 6:15 am. It took much longer than usual to get out to Reeves Field; Visibility was about 200 feet. I had to slow down to 50 mph just to be able to see and slow down for the turnoff to the  field. Elwyn was already there. People started arriving and the day slowly brightened through the fog.

We decided to run shortened versions Saturdays events. We ran Profile unlimited, Classic/ Nostalgia, and Old Time Stunt Plus with two attempts for one official. This saved a lot of time. By 10:15, we started the stunt classes, which we ran normally. ( three attempts for two officials).  This year, our biggest class was Expert, and then Advanced. We had no entries in Beginner, and none in Intermediate. ( Last year we had three entries in each)

We managed to get everything flown off by 2:30 pm. Then we had the raffle, and the awards ceremony, and got everybody heading home by 3:30 pm.

I went to Tulsa on Sat to judge OT stunt.
The wife and I let our oldest son (David) do the driving.  We left Wichita in rain and it stayed with us the whole trip down.  Since there was no flying, we had a great time just visiting with friends.  We really did have a very good time.  Thanks to the Tulsa Glue-Dobber ladies.  They really put up a great feast (Well worth the trip down)   We had to leave Sat afternoon to get back to Wichita (Dr's orders) and left there in the rain.  We drove to about 10 miles west of Tulsa and ran out of the rain----bummer.
All in all,  We had a great time.

 De,

I was unable to compete this year due to a last minute work conflict. I was beyond upset about it. I was driving back through Missouri/Kansas in all that wind and rain and wondered how the contest was going. Do you guys have a spring contest? I really want to compete for the first time.

Hi Marvin,

We were delighted to see you, Ree, and David again.

You did win some raffle prizes. I'll see that you get them.

Hi Ron,

I'm sorry you didn't make it. Saturday was rained out, but sunday was great. We don't have a spring contest. Years ago, in the late 1980's and early 1990's, we had two contests a year; both stunt and combat.  Combat died out in the early 1990's and we dropped the combat contest. For a few years, we had contests over the fourth of july weeked. We even ran the stunt portion of the mirror meet for four  years.

Cordially,

De Hill

Looks like I missed another one.   Did not make St Louis either.   Hope I can make it to Topeka with out too  much trouble this weekend.  Getting old is for the pits.   Well when my granddaughter get a little more experience and will help me she will get the driving chores.  Pain pills don't help any, so I am off those.   Just have to live with it.   Hopefully next year.   Unless there is a carrier meet coming up later.   Tell Elwyn I really enjoyed the photos.

The local Carrier ramrod got really busy and hasn't done much at all this year with airplanes. Missed Brodaks and came real close to missing the Tulsa meet even though it was in my front yard. Hope I can get these projects out of the way by next spring and start playing again.
