Bi-Slob---BooBoo----BooHoo
« on: June 16, 2007, 07:38:21 AM »
Got a chance to do a little flying yesterday. I decided it was time to quit using the Bi-Slob for a wall ornament and put it to use for it's intended purpose. There were four of us and no one there had actually ever seen a Bi-Slob fly. The first time I flew it the engine was set too rich and it was just round and round. The second and third times it was set right and I have to say I had never seen anything like it. Great fun. I had a friend there who is a very good and conservative flier. I talked him in to trying it. A couple of laps in to the flight something mechanical happened and the Bi-Slob was kindling. It is re-doable and it is at the top of my list to get it back in the air. The postmortem didn't reveal the cause. :'( :'( :'(

Which Bi Slob was it exactly?  Kit, arf or ??  I want to build one and any info would be good.  I'm leaning towards scratching it.

Hi Russell,

I was going to scratch one, but found a kit, sealed, at a contest for a whopping $5................. almost broke the bank, but I bought it anyway! **)

Haven't opened it yet, but I hear good things about the kit!

The Brodak kits are great to work with.  Very good instruction booklet.  I built two of the Bi-Slobs at the same time.  One kit was great.  The other kit I had problems with some of the wood eing too brittle.  I used twice as much CA on it just gluing ribs back together.  Both Bi-Slobs fly great on 52 foot .015 lines.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

The one I built;t was a Brodak ARF. I was very pleased with the quality. I agree the instructions were very good. After the crash I noticed that the threaded clevis had pulled off of the control rod. It was the one that had interconnected the wing flaps. I don't think it happened prior to the crash, but it might not hurt to put some thin CA on it after you get it adjusted. We thought there was a chance that the connecting strut that has the leadouts coming thru it might have come loose. The glue joint was not first class, which was my fault.

Bill. I am sorry to hear of you having to pay $ 5.00 for a kit. I have had the same experience of paying too much for something. I always hope in vain that someone will come along and give me enough for it to let me out of the mistake. I don't have a lot of money, but as my way of "giving something back to society" I sometimes help people like you out of a bad deal. If you will PM your adress I will send you ten dollars which will cover your original investment plus postage. I can only do a few of these deals each year, but if you have made similar bad deal on a kit or engine send me the details and I will see what I can do.

You know, Keith, this post is just another examlpe of how truly outstanding the fine people I have met in this hobby really are.  Your kind and generous offer to help me recoup my losses is magnanamous beyond expression!

However, I decided to just "bite the bullet", "learn from my mistakes",.....

and hope that I make that mistake a few more times! **)

BTW:  Your repairs look like it was never damaged at all!  Great job. y1
