Title: Best flying outfit at VSC XX
Post by: Shultzie on March 15, 2008, 02:18:52 PM: This just in from a friend who shot this a few days ago at VSC? What a great flying suit.
Anyone else have a favorite flying suit that can top this one.
In truth...
I think not only the stunters should be judged for appearence...but also their pilots? LL~ :-[

I gave the 'starting signal to the judges...fired up the old Sting Ray....ran out to the handle...gave the release signal to my helper....

On the second level lap...I smelled something burnin'
IT WAS MY RAIN JACKET COAT TAIL...IT WAS ON FIRE....With hardley a TWITCH...I slapped out the flame with my left hand and kept on flying....

After the flight was over...I noticed just how close I came to becoming a roman-candle.
That old Merco always had a bad habit of belching on first flip...it would start running backwards for a few pops...and then start running the right direction. H^^ LL~

How many times over the years have we noticed after engine start ups...that we would some times have FIRE IN THE HOLE...or somewhere else? Amazing just how difficult it is to actually see alkeee' flames before damage can be done.
With that in mind...I think this attached photo would be the perfect flying suit.

Fox 35's were great for belching fire in the wintertime if you top primed them. When I got back into this I cought My Grinder on fire and beat the living Cr-p out of it to get it out. At the next Fireball meeting Dave Royer introduced me an then told everyone that I gave the name Fireballs a new meaning. HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~>
Post script about this incident I rebuilt the plane an painted over the charcoal and it gave me something to talk about for awhile. Like Doc says "Have Fun".

Post by: Elwyn Aud on March 16, 2008, 06:59:42 PM: I've caught a few Fox 35's on fire in the winter also. Luckily each time I either heard the little poof or saw the grass burning under the nose before it burnt more than a few blades. I don't think I'd be able to hear the little poof anymore.

Smokin!! Good thing you didn't pass air!! ;D

Glad you were able to put it out before getting injured.

Before synthetics, many of us who flew in the winter used propane torches to get the engine warm enough to flip. As you said, alcohol fires are hard to see ... until you see the paint bubbling. ???

Gave propane torches up. ;D

LOL! THAT "CRACKS ME UP! SPEAKING OF "CRACKS!" (Many years ago...working a late night shift in the wind tunnel...one of our more infamous modelmakers....who had a horrific problem of alway "passing gas" in tight spaces (in the bellmouth of the wind tunnel) one night he thought it would be funny to see if that ol' tale-tail' was actually true.
He did just that...while holding a lit butane torch to his....U know what!

Thankfully he was hurt...but he was escorted out of the test section by the night supervisor and was directed to spend the last part of the eve. greasing down the infamous "3RD CORNER!"
Later that month---
He made my monthly safety newsletter called "OOPS TEX!" LL~ LL~
