Cool...is it from a kit? Built from plans? ARF?

As far as I know, it came unassembled, so it meets the requirements for the BOM...

I am pretty sure that it doesn't meet BOM UN assembled means UN finished raw materials. This has been tried and tested before. Until I am shown a raw kit UN assembled UN covered UN finished No parts of any kind glued together less plywood its just another ARF. And I like Bene.

First beautiful model.Robert I beg to differ on the point that all models or parts must be raw balsa no such rule exist.
I'm only discussing this one point of there being a rule that states raw balsa kits only.
The AMA has no such ruling.
I can't say if Bene's model is BOM compliant as no one knows the condition of the parts wen they were shipped to him.
Lets wait on the info before declaring the model Non Compliant.

It is a cool model. Jose please show me a BOM compliant shark your right no rule exists but there should be. However I believe it does say uncovered and unfinished. We need a clear cut rule so people stop trying to use shades of grey.

A rule definitely does exist. It's that you are supposed to "completely construct" your model. This one is certainly not constructed by the modeler.

I am confused.  (Maybe not an unusual thing)  But, what is the issue here.  Bene competes in FAI competition.  There is NO BOM requirement.  So what is the criticism for?

Yes, Bene has competed here in the States including the Nats and our VSC.  I am reasonably sure that he built the models he used in any of our AMA contests that have been compliant with our BOM rules.

I never saw the ship before it being painted, and Bene said he ordered the ship a certain way so he could fly it at the NATS  and meet the BOM rules...
I'll ask him.

Bradley,

Isn't it outstanding. Glad I Posted the photo of the elliptical wing I designed long before this Thread.  ;D

Besides, I don't beliebe it's truly elliptical, it appears as though the tips have been cut off and squared a bit. Not sure if that removes the design brom being truly elliptical or not?

Still outstanding!!

Marcus, tell Bene the old DOC says that is one great looking plane.   Watch for him on the world circuit when he starts getting serious.   Now for my rant, so he now has a Shark that he has assembled and finished.  He will also be competing  with it.   We all know he is a competent builder, so why the  fuss of using a Shark kit no matter the variation of the kit?   Maybe he can make up the Appearance points over most of the guys that fly here in the states.   How simple it would be if appearance points were just dropped out of sight.   Look at the competition around the world at the gorgeous planes that are being used.    R%%%%

Well, it wouldn't change one thing is appearance points were dropped.  Because entering 322 has zip, zero, nada, nothing to do with appearance points. You have to build the model to enter the event that leads to crowing the national champion of the USA. Appearance points are part of the scoring of your model you built.

On another note that wing is AWESOME!

Mike I found that style doesn't matter much.  A design has to win about 5 Nats and a Worlds before you'll sell more than about 5 kits.

Hi Derek,

I think I remember you from the 1993 NATS at Lawerenceville.Vincennes?  Where you there?  Aaron and I met Bob and Robby Hunt there.  Had a good time in the parking lot with Steve Buso putting together a fictitious "Paper Towel Commercial" while wiping down our models. ;D

Dave you pretty much hit the nail on the head.  The Stingray kit I am working on now will probably be the last kit I will produce.  I have had very little interest in it and it was a Nats winner in 1964.
Title: Re: Bene's new Shark...
Post by: Dave_Trible on February 06, 2014, 08:58:43 AM
Mike it's a tough go.  In the 50-70s there was a network or pipeline of hobby distributors and thousands of hobby shops across the country.  You can make a living just making enough to fill the pipeline.  That promoted continually developing new kits to stuff that pipeline.  That whole network is gone which did away with the pipe to fill and the casual shopper finding your stuff in every town in America.   The serious nucleus is still here as always but it was  the casual or one-time buyer that supported the industry.   If there is any way to change that it has to be finding ways to pull in brand new people to the hobby.  That has always been the fuel to keep it going.  Very simple beginner stuff sold cheaply in as many outlets as possible is the only chance for much new growth.
