Bending Music Wire "cold"
« on: April 23, 2011, 08:20:22 AM »

This is done "cold" and with two older and used Vise Grips. Charlie Reeves showed me how to do this. I even accidentally bent 5/32" wire this way. Note you have to cut off the inside corners of the Vise Grips.

Now that's interesting. Keep both legs straight because the bend force is localized where it belongs, at the bend. I'll have to try this. The older I get the more difficult wire bending is, I've lost allot of strength in my hands. Thanks Allen.

Thanks Allen for the photos. That is what Jim Lynch showed us at our club meeting.

I know Jim and Charlie are good friends. One must have showed other.

I have been doing it that way also. I use my vice sometimes if I want a sharper bend. I have rounded notches filed in the jaws for several sizes of wire, and then use vice grips to bend it. I have bent some pretty sharp corners in landing gear legs without a failure for many years. We need a knocking on wood icon. LOL

I've got Vise-Grips at work and Vise-Grips at home, but bought a matched pair of new ones to do this. They were genuine stuff...and made in PRC...and cost about $17ea.  plus over 9% sales tax. I'll get the bill into the mail soon, Allen.  LL~

I used the disc sander in the weld shop at work to chamfer the jaws...and was very surprised at how soft the jaws were. That's a good thing, I'm sure....   :-\ Steve
