Bellanca Super Viking 300
« on: May 03, 2006, 07:40:47 PM »
As I have been  sidetracked for modeling for a
while, and as I was trying to get my basement back in order (Since the burst water pipe flood) I ran across an article on the subject stunter and took out time to look it over.  It is in the October 1969 issue of MAN.  Has anyone out there ever built one?  If so, how did it fly and what if any were the problems in building OR flying it.  IF I ever get back to building and flying again...  .

Bigiron,
Can you scan the picture from the magazine and post it? I think I remember this model but a picture would help.

Bigiron, I think Tom McClain built one. You might want to talk with him.

Marvin,

The Bellanca was designed by Jim Young. It uses the same wing as the Roadrunner, with a change for landing gear location. I have the laser ribs for the RR and will be making the changes for the Bellanca rib set.

Jim Young has told me that his original Bellanca is one of the best airplanes that he has ever had.

I also have the plans available at Blue Sky Models  www.blueskymodels.net

Hi bigiron,

Robert Compton has had two I think.  I believe he told me that he used a '70s big case Fox 40 in one.  I know he said it was a very good flying plane.

As Tom N. said, it's a take off from Jim Young's RR. Get a set of plans from Mr. Niebuhr, they are very nice!

An added plus is that the cokpit is open and easy to detail without much effort, and you can get a muffler system (you can custom make one!) inside the cowl without much problem depending on your engine choice.

Here you go...

That is one of Mr. Young's originals.  Enclosed exhaust that exited through two outlets on the bottom.   I expect it is in a pretty scale location.

Hey!! I like it. I saw it once a long time ago. I liked it then too.

Zuriel-thanks for the picture man! It looks like you dug it out of an album.

Frank,

I have tried to save photos over the past few years.  I'm not the originator of this photo, I just liked it too.

I do miss your expressive posts!!! ;D ;D ;D

I was enjoying playing with the emoticans myself........but Sparky said .....
"STEP AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD".

It would be nice if he'd open a section for us to doodle in.

My buddy Charlie Campbell brought out a couple foto albums from yesteryear. Oh, to be that young again. and with hair.

Keith,

I don't know if Tom McClain ever built one before this year, but he had a Bellanca Flash scale/Stunt model at VSC this March. That was based on a 1930's racing / long distance Bellanca, and had a skid-like fixture under the center of the fuselage to anchor the lift-wire rigging.

T'was a bit small for th wing area, and that rigging fixture was a problem even on the smooth paving. A noble and difficult struggle, though.

Frank, I cannot post pictures. My Scanner is not communicating with my computer. I can  scan abd print a picture from the computer or the copier screen, but when I wish to send it to E-Mail or a file in the computer, they quit communicating.

  Sorry.

Zuriel,

I will send a copy of the Bellanca picture to Jim Young. I am sure that he will love it.
