Bearcat 617E
« on: March 30, 2012, 07:11:52 AM »
Although I have not been able to spend much time modeling or flying, I still like to design.  Here is the latest new next project (hopefully).  For electric, a Bearcat with 617 squares, target weight of 56 ounces.  Should be a lot of fun.
Changes from the old big Bearcat at 710 squares:
Obviously, smaller and lighter.  I have found out that my size and weight is not in compliance with 60 sized models.  The wing has been raised a little, with only a small amount of dihedral (less than 1/2").  All new +P style airfoil.  Smaller tips for a more realistic look.  The fuselage top and bottom sheeting is all 1/16" light balsa with stringers to support it.  Overall weight of all the components is as light as reasonable.  If the weight hits the mid fifties, it will be very competitive with my Mustang which is 626 squares and 57 ounces.
Here is a shot of the layout for those to gander.

Are those flaps substantial enough?  Reminds me of the Go Devil with partial span flaps.  That didn't work well.

Pat,
Have you tried to take your plans from the Brodak Bearcat and making drawings to convert those to electric.
If you ever did I would be interested in building the one I have now for the conversion. I realize the model is a bit smaller but theres plenty of room for a four cell setup. Just keep that in mind.
Later,

Nice Pat !  You have excellent taste in airframes.  :)  I want one. Yeah, just like I want about a dozen of your designs. Wish I had the time to build them all. I'll stay tuned.  ;)

Floyd,
The smaller flaps allow the tail to be more effective in the corners.  This is because the elevators do not have to overcome the effect of the flaps.  The TVC of .443 is even more enhanced by this, making it closer to the .500 range, which is close to the Impact.  Think of non flapped planes which turn like crazy.  Think Jamison Special.  This is one with the smallest flaps possible.  That is: Zero.  The JS has a very large TVC and a very good airfoil.  Very far ahead of it's time.
To the request of making the Brodak Bearcat an electric.  I would like to talk to Denny A. about that and see if the size is appropriate for this sort of conversion.  If so, perhaps I can work up a set of parts as an add-on to do the conversion.  Shouldn't be all that tough.  I do just about have the plans finished to the 617E.  Please stay tuned.

Steve,
Actually, this is my own design.  It is a progression of designs from older Bearcats.  This one will be easier to build light, while having a more fully rounded fuselage than my older designs.  I am close to getting the details done on the plans and then I'll post them on this thread.

Pat, you're killin me !!!  Man, I'm droolin !  I'd be tempted to change the rudder a tad. The early versions had the smallest rudder, which IMHO looks better and  is more than adequate for our needs.  #^
